THE QUEENSHIP OF

THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

TUESDAY, AUGUST 22

Mary's Queenship has roots in Scripture.

In the Old Testament, the king’s mother had the

role as the “Queen Mother.”

1 Kings 2:20 shows the Queen Mother role

with King Solomon and his mother Bathsheba:

Then she said, “I have one small request

to make of you; do not refuse me.”

And the king said to her, “Make your request,

my mother; for I will not refuse you.”

Not only is Jesus the King of Kings,

He is part of the Davidic line that had the Queen Mother title.

Since Jesus is the King of the universe, Mary is also its Queen.

The doctrine of the Coronation of Mary at the

Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D.

confirms that Mary is

the “Mother of God.”

Calling Mary “queen” was common by the 6th century.

At the Seventh Ecumenical Council in the 8th century,

the Eastern and Western Churches called

Mary the “Queen of all, the true Mother of God,”

and the “Queen of all Christians.”

Pius XII established this Feast in 1954.

The feast is a logical follow up to the Assumption,

and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast.

In his 1954 encyclical, To the Queen of Heaven,

Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title

because she is Mother of God,

because she is closely associated as the

New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work,

because of her preeminent perfection,

and because of her intercessory power (John 2:1-12).

Some of the most common Marian hymns in the Church

feature Mary as Queen:

We also continue to recognize the Coronation of Mary

as Queen in the 5th Glorious Mystery of the Rosary.

WHAT IS THE RESCUE PROJECT?

The Rescue Project is an experience of

community, conversation, prayer

and the story of the Gospel

with Fr. John Riccardo!

The most urgent task is the compelling proclamation of the gospel,

one that not only shares it in an attractive – and concentrated – way,

but that also offers people a way of seeing reality,

and of making sense of the world, history, and life

that is vastly different from the story our modern culture tells.

Until this happens, the Christian faith is often experienced

as a mere set of rules and disciplines,

and simply going to Church isn’t likely to lead a person

to embark on the great adventure that is following Jesus

and continuing His mission of the rescuing of this world.

HOW BOOKS

ARE ESSENTIAL

TO FAITH

The stories we surround ourselves with shape our lives

in incredible and often unintended ways.

The media we consume often has an immediate and lasting

impact because it appeals to our senses and imagination.

This is not a bad thing.

God designed our hearts and minds to be formed and

moved by the world around us.

For this reason consuming good media

is key to forming a healthy imagination and a good will.

Having good books at home,

and reading books that affirm and uplift our values

are essential to living the faith at home.

“Only God knows the good that can come

about by reading one good Catholic book.”

St. John Bosco

NOVENA PRAYER TO

ST. MONICA

STARTS FRIDAY,

AUGUST 18

St. Monica prayed for her son's conversion

for more than 15 years.

She prayed constantly with faith and hope in God.

What was the result of all those years of prayer?

One of the great saints in the history of the Church:

her son, St. Augustine!

That's why Saint Monica is known for her intercession

for those who have fallen away from the faith.

It's also why we recommend that you pray this novena

with the intentions that you've been praying for the longest

-- St. Monica is the perfect intercessor for those intentions!

In addition, Saint Monica is also the patron saint of

alcoholics, married women, mothers, wives, and difficult marriages.

SPECIAL PRAYERS

Prayer in Honor

of the

Queenship of Mary

O Mary Immaculate Queen, look down upon this

distressed and suffering world.

You know our misery and our weakness.

O thou who art our Mother,

saving us in the hour of peril,

have compassion on us in these days

of great and heavy trial.

Jesus has confided to you the treasure of His grace,

and through you He wills to grant us pardon and mercy.

In these hours of anguish, therefore,

your children come to you as their hope.

We recognize your Queenship and ardently desire your triumph.

We need a Mother and a Mother's Heart.

You are for us the luminous dawn which dissipates

our darkness and points out the way to life.

In your clemency obtain for us the courage

and the confidence of which we have such need.

Most Holy and Adorable Trinity, You Who did

crown with glory in Heaven the Blessed Virgin Mary,

Mother of the Savior,

grant that all her children on earth may acknowledge her

as their Sovereign Queen, that all hearts, homes, and nations

may recognize her rights as Mother and as Queen.

Mary Immaculate Queen,

triumph and reign!

Amen

American Eucharistic Witnesses:

A Priest for the Body of Christ

—Venerable Augustus Tolton

Born into slavery and baptized in northeast Missouri in 1854,

Augustus Tolton’s early life was traumatic.

His father escaped to join the Union army

after the Battle of Fort Sumter in 1861.

A year later, when his mother Martha Jane

hadn’t heard from her husband,

she courageously made her own escape from slavery.

Carrying a twenty-month-old baby girl in her arms,

and with her two sons Charles and Augustus by her side,

she plunged into the night toward freedom.

Hiding by day, moving by night, and praying with every terrified breath,

they made their way to the North.

At one point accosted by slave catchers…

Click below to read the rest of Bishop Joseph Perry’s

essay on Ven. Augustus Tolton,

the first native Black U.S. priest who ministered

to anyone and everyone

—Black or white—

who came to him seeking the grace and mercy of God,

offering his whole heart in service

to the Mystical Body of Christ.

The Eucharist and the Sacred Heart:

A Prayer after Communion

By St. John Henry Newman

Most Sacred, most loving Heart of Jesus,

You are concealed in the Holy Eucharist,

And you beat for us still.

Now, as then, you say: “With desire I have desired.”

I worship you with all my best love and awe,

With fervent affection,

With my most subdued, most resolved will.

For a while you take up your abode within me.

O make my heart beat with your Heart!

Purify it of all that is earthly,

All that is proud and sensual,

All that is hard and cruel,

Of all perversity,

Of all disorder,

Of all deadness.

So fill it with you,

That neither the events of the day,

Nor the circumstances of the time,

May have the power to ruffle it;

But that in your love and your fear,

It may have peace.

WHY DOES THE PRIEST KISS THE ALTAR AT MASS?

HUMOR HIGHLIGHT

WHAT WOULD HE PAY?

While waiting in line to check out at a Christian bookstore,

a man in front of me asked the clerk about a display of hats

with the letters WWJD on them.

The clerk explained that WWJD stands for

"What would Jesus do?"

and that the idea is to get people to

consider this question when making decisions.

The man pondered a moment, then replied,

"I don't think he'd pay $17.95 for that hat."

GOSPEL READING REFLECTION

For August 20, 2023

THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel:  Mt 15:21-28

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

PRAY WITH BOLDNESS

  • Jesus with his disciples has withdrawn for a time to pagan territory, although there were likely some Jews there, as there were all over the Roman Empire and Middle East.

  • Somehow this Canaanite woman knew who Christ was: the “Lord, Son of David.”

  • She is very persistent and probably loud, “in their face” annoying, with her cries for help for her daughter.

  • Jesus declares he “was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Elsewhere he affirms that he only does the will of the Father. These two statements would seem to mean that it was not the Father’s will that the Son do anything for pagans. This cannot be true, for due to her great faith, Christ heals the woman’s daughter.

  • From this we can understand that the Father’s will was really for the salvation of the whole world, which is why Jesus gave the apostles his Great Commission after his Resurrection to go and make disciples of all nations.

ANSWER TO QUIZ

Before celebrating every Mass the priest

approaches the altar and kisses it.

To some this practice seems rather odd,

as altars are material objects of stone or wood

and don’t seem to warrant any particular reverence.

What is the significance behind this ancient custom?

It is clear that from the earliest times

a kiss was not only a token of love,

but also under certain circumstances

a symbol of profound respect.

Every time a priest kisses or reverences the altar,

he does so in order to honor the altar of sacrifice

(which represents Christ) where the miracle of the Eucharist occurs.

The kiss also signifies the union of the Spouse (Christ)

and his Bride (the Church).

Another reason, deeply rooted in ancient Christian tradition,

is to reverence the relics of the saint or martyr

placed within the altar itself.

While it is true that altars are material objects,

they have been set apart for a specific purpose

and kissing the altar recognizes its privileged role

and relation to the divine sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

BOOK

RECOMMENDATION

We need to be armed for battle!

At all times, and especially during these crazy times in this vale of tears,

we need to lay our foundation in Christ Jesus.

Spiritual reading helps us build and strengthen that foundation.

This week's recommendation is:

The Liber Christo Method:

A Field Manual for Spiritual Combat

By Dr. Dan Schneider

____________________________________________________________________

We fight an ancient enemy, and the ancient weapons are best.

Since the creation of man,

the devil has sought the ruin of souls.

Liber Christo is a tactical field manual

for those interested in not only learning more

about spiritual combat, but also engaging

and winning the spiritual battles of this present day.

As a professor of theology,

a former U.S. Army attack helicopter pilot, combat veteran,

and a member of Fr. Chad Ripperger’s exorcism team,

Dr. Dan Schneider offers practical spiritual steps

to conquer the ancient enemy and obtain lasting spiritual freedom.

Here you will learn spiritual “guerrilla warfare”

tactics based on real experience in modern spiritual combat.

Also the NEW movie, Nefarious, which explores spiritual combat,

is being recommended for Christians to watch.

Released in April 2023, Nefarious is a film written and directed

by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon,

based on Steve Deace’s 2016 novel A Nefarious Plot.

The plot revolves around a psychiatrist (Jordan Belfi)

who must determine if a convicted death-row inmate (Sean Patrick Flanery)

is faking his alleged demonic possession.
