Is something missing in American spirituality?

By John Pavlovitz

The Christian Century

"Have you noticed that something is missing in American spirituality?

It isn’t religion. We have plenty of that.

It isn’t Christians. There are tens of millions of professed followers of Jesus here.

It isn’t Christian churches. It’s difficult to travel a mile without encountering a half a dozen houses of worship of various denominations.

What we’re missing is kindness."

Be An Angel Day - August 22

National Today

"Be An Angel Day — observed on August 22 each year, pushes us to become someone’s angel of sorts. Whether it is a grand gesture (sponsoring someone’s education) or small (saying ‘thank you’ when someone helps you), a good gesture goes a long way towards sending goodwill out into the world. By supporting someone in need (or recalling someone who supported you), you celebrate the very essence of this day." Read more.

We invite you to join us to learn about the Refugee Welcome Network. RWN seeks to connect individuals and families newly arrived in the U.S. and Washington County to community resources, including housing, household goods, English lessons, jobs, food and clothing, and more, and support them with friendship and community as they settle in their new home. The RWN operates under the auspices of HARC and is almost all volunteer-led. Join us for lunch, fellowship, and this unique program, including hearing from a refugee about their experience. First Christian Church will host our meeting and provide the lunch with a free-will offering basket. Ample parking is available and the building is accessible. RSVP requested by Friday, September 6 at noon so we can get a count for lunch.

Urgent housing/shelter needed for refugee family

The Refugee Welcome Network (RWN), DSS, Children In Need and CASA continue to work with refugee family of 6 that is desperately in need of housing. CASA has paid for a hotel stay for them for two months, but that is up the end of August and RWN has been unsuccessful in finding them housing. If you have a place they can stay temporarily OR if you have or know of an affordable apartment or home (or parsonage) the RWN can rent for them, please contact Jane at 240-469-5084 or jane.powell365@gmail.com or Kathy at director@harccoalition.org or 301-842-4272. Please pass this on to everyone you know! We don't want to see this family end up homeless.
