San Francisco-Today, Father's Day, at San Francisco's AMC Theatres Kabuki 8 in the Fillmore District of San Francisco where Ave Montague founded the festival, San Francisco Black Film Festival XXV, "25 Year of Resilience and Empowerment" will acknowledge two fathers who impacted its history. The SFBFF "Kali O'Ray My Dad is My Hero Award" and The SFBFF Jeff Adachi Social Justice Award in honor of O'Ray, who passed August 7, 2020 and Adachi who died February 22, 2019 will be presented.


The "My Dad Is My Hero Award" was instituted in 2011, with its first award going to Lionel Armstrong as nominated via an essay by his daughter, poet and writer Tiffany Gorman. The 2022 inaugural " Kali O'Ray My Dad is My Hero" Award recipient was The Alameda County Fathers Corps.


The 2019 inaugural "SFBFF Jeff Adachi Social Justice Award" was presented to Justin Givens for his Arizona based film Disparity, A Tale of Two PUSHAZ.


The film "Zinzun: A Revolutionary Activist" by Dennis Haywood and James Farr, recipient of the San Francisco Black Film Festival Jeff Adachi Social Justice Award was featured at the South African 43rd Durban International Film Festival, a partner of the San Francisco Black Film Festival since 2020.

Cree Ray, Executive Director of the San Francisco Black Film Festival Speaks with Justin Andrews of KPIX about feature film starring Marvel Studios' Black Panther Star Letitia Wright as “Mo” Washington, an intrepid Buffalo Soldier in “Surrounded” directed by Anthony Mandler, among other films of the San Francisco Black Film Festival, XXV, “25 Years of Resilience and Empowerment, Healing the World One Film At A Time” kicking off a yearlong celebration.


The San Francisco Black Film Festival is traditionally held during Black Music Month, Over Juneteenth and Father's Day Weekend.

A perfect film selection during Black Music Month, the first film of the day is a 15-minute film “A Stranger’s Story” by James Batiste and directed by Alonzo Waller, about the progenitor of “NOLA’s Royal Family of Music” John “J.J.” Batiste, who inspired a family of musicians including grandson, EGOT - winner Jon Batiste, former band leader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “A Stranger’s Story” is a great tribute to fatherhood.

The second film is a 45-minute documentary, “Third Baptist Church” by local award-winning filmmaker Kevin Epps about the juggernaut of the 170-year-old spiritual, social justice organization known for regenerating people. “Third Baptist Church” speaks to the resilience of Black people that is an inspiration for all people. Third Baptist Church is now led by Dr. Amos Brown, President of the San Francisco NAACP.

Doors open at the AMC Kabuki 8 Theatre, 1881 Post Street, San Francisco 94115, at 12:30 p.m. and screening will begin at 1 p.m. as soon as the audience is seated. Photo Ops with filmmakers will be possible after the screenings. Please note that Ms. Wright will not be in attendance but she has sent a message to be shown before “Surrounded.”

OAKLAND, CA- The Congregation of Miracles of Faith Community Church, ELCA in East Oakland invites the public to join in the celebration of the retirement of its pastor, Reverend Dr. Greggory L. Brown, who has served the church and the community with his wife, author and poet, Mary Lessen Brown, for 20 years of his more than 40 years of service to The Lord Jesus Christ. It will be at the church, 3:00 p.m. on June 25th


Throughout his leadership at Miracles of Faith Community Church, Dr. Brown has utilized music to bring the community together around issues of spirituality, social justice and civil rights at various programs held over the years.
