HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!


July 4th is Independence Day,

a time to show your patriotic pride.


The federal holiday marks the day in 1776

when the Second Continental Congress

unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence,

signaling the official separation of the colonies

from Great Britain amid the Revolutionary War.


Since that day, July 4, 1776 has been considered

America’s “birthday,” making her 247 years old today.


This Independence Day, let our collective memory

be jogged on the ways that

Christian faith

has been a bedrock of our nation

and a force for change.


The birthday of our country is an opportunity

to take to heart again Thomas Jefferson’s words

— adapted from St. Robert Bellarmine,

who wrote 150 years earlier-


“All men are equal, not in wisdom or grace,

but in the essence and nature of mankind”


And these words are reflected in our own Constitution as:


“We hold these truths to be self-evident,

that all men are created equal,

that they are endowed by their Creator

with certain unalienable Rights,

that among these are

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty


O God our Creator,

from your provident hand we have received

our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

You have called us as your people and given us

the right and the duty to worship you,

the only true God,

and your Son, Jesus Christ.


Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,

you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,

bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel

to every corner of society.


We ask you to bless us

in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.

Give us the strength of mind and heart

to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;

give us courage in making our voices heard

on behalf of the rights of your Church

and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.


Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,

a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters

gathered in your Church

in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,

so that, with every trial withstood

and every danger overcome—

for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,

and all who come after us—

this great land will always be

"one nation, under God,

throughout our very human history.

But today we confront all of them, all at once.

Our response in this moment is pivotal.


In the midst of these roaring waves, 

Jesus is present, reminding us that he is

more powerful than the storm.


He desires to heal, renew, and unify

the Church and the world.


How will he do it?

By uniting us once again around the source and summit

of our faith in the celebration of the Eucharist.


The National Eucharistic Revival is the joyful,

expectant, grassroots response of the entire

Catholic Church in the U.S. to this divine invitation.

departing from our nation's north, south, east, and west edges.

for the National Eucharistic Congress.

A Prayer after Communion

Most Sacred, most loving Heart of Jesus,

You are concealed in the Holy Eucharist,

ALWAYS A WINNER




Jesus, Moses, and an old bearded guy were playing golf. On the first tee, Moses shanked his ball into a lake. He parted the water and hit his ball onto the green.


Jesus teed off, hitting his ball into another water hazard. But he walked on water and stroked his ball just short of the cup.


Then the old man with the beard stepped up for his tee shot. He hit the ball with tremendous force, but hooked it badly. The ball bounced off the clubhouse roof, hit the cart path, and rolled down a hill into a pond, coming to rest on a lily pad. A frog hopped over and picked up the ball, then an eagle swooped down, snatched the frog and flew over the green. The frog dropped the ball, and it rolled into the cup for a hole in one.


Moses turned to Jesus and said, "I hate playing golf with your dad."

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel:  Mt 10:37-42

THE FAMILY AND THE KINGDOM


  • The original family of God is the inner life of the Blessed Trinity.


  • In that image, God created the human family of father, mother, and children.


  • Now, Christ creates a new family of God that does not destroy natural human family ties but orders them to the Kingdom of God. Allegiance to Christ comes first so that if there is a conflict between God’s will and one’s own will or the will of another family member, God’s will must come first.



  • In God’s new family in this life there is a new economy or order. The Father sends Christ. Christ sends the apostles. And they, in turn, send us. We should welcome ambassadors of Christ. This means showing them hospitality, helping support them within our means, and, above all, listening to them. Christ promises that God will richly reward us for this, as the sonless wife was rewarded by Elisha.

Sanity, remember, does not mean living in the same world as everyone else;

it means living in the real world.

But some of the most important elements

in the real world can be known only by the revelation of God,

which it is theology’s business to study.


Lacking this knowledge, the mind must live a half-blind life,

trying to cope with a reality most of which it does not know is there.


This is a wretched state for an immortal spirit,

and pretty certain to lead to disaster.



There is a good deal of disaster around at this moment.

We pray you will be excited to embark on purposeful

spiritual reading as a way to build a more prayer-filled,

Christ centered life.
