A Note from the

Executive Director

Dear friends,

H2HC is fortunate to work with a wonderful and growing cohort of colleagues and thought partners seeking long-terms solutions for advancing health equity.

We have been busily engaging, interacting, and collaborating, from taking part in events on both coasts with Grantmakers in Health, the Tufts Food is Medicine Institute, and the Tufts Food and Nutrition Innovation Council, to serving as an evaluator for a corporate foundation's national prize-making program.

Our three remarkable Leadership Council members are committed to both supporting H2HC's work and advancing health equity through their individual organizational agendas. They have each recently released important annual reports that I encourage you to read (please see details below).

  • KDP focuses its corporate social responsibility work through its Drink Well, Do Good framework,
  • Stop & Shop focuses its community commitments through its Feed it Forward strategy and,
  • The Greater Boston Food Bank has issued its fourth annual survey on food insecurity across Massachusetts.

Finally, we are looking forward to an exciting Fall Summit and introducing our 2024 Prizes for Innovation winners.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, and I hope to see you at our Summit.

Warmly,

Nicolene Hengen

Executive Director

2023 H2HC Prize Winner: Food as Strategic Lever

DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) is a 2023 H2HC Innovation Prize winner. In May, DCCK CEO Mike Curtin spoke on Good Morning Washington about food as a tool for creating upstream pathways to lasting change.

“We’re never going to feed our way out of hunger. It’s a harsh reality that we knew on day one in 1989 and remains evident to this day... Food, when used as a tool to create pathways to opportunity and living wage jobs, not only strengthens bodies, but it empowers minds and builds communities. Behind every one of the 50 million meals we have served is a training and career opportunity that empowered someone to change their life while nourishing our city.” - Mike Curtin, CEO, DC Central Kitchen

In May, The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) released its fourth annual statewide survey on food insecurity.

The survey, conducted in partnership with Mass General Brigham, reports that one in three adults in Massachusetts, or 1.9 million adults, are food insecure. The survey highlights lived experience and proposes community-based solutions to eradicate hunger.

H2HC is proud to have helped launch this annual survey through funding support in its first two years.
