The Guard Mode Upgrade for the IS&S ThrustSense® Autothrottle is Now Certified and Provides Protection Modes While Allowing the Pilot to Fly the King Air Manually

Guard Mode prevents over-speed, engine over temperature and torque exceedances while the Autothrottle is in Manual Mode (not engaged). When the Pilot operates the Power Levers manually and the airplane approaches a limit the Autothrottle servo is activated to provide an opposite force to the Power Lever alerting the Pilot that a Limit is to be exceeded. This Force is predominate, and by “feel” keeps the pilot from exceeding the approaching limit. This is the same protection which is provided when the Autothrottles are engaged. Guard Mode allows the Pilot to “feel” their way around the full flight envelope without visual reading of the flight deck instruments keeping their eyes out of the Cockpit. 


Guard mode is not a persistent mode. When an exceedance is present, GUARD mode will activate the autothrottle (A/T GUARD) to reduce power in an attempt to correct the exceedance. As soon as the exceedance condition is resolved, GUARD mode relinquishes control of power to the previous mode. The active exceedance will be displayed in the A/T Message Annunciation window.
