The Lowdown with Lori
The kids are officially out of school! Yippeeeeee ….

Now what to do with them this summer. Everyone loves taking a family vacation. It gives the whole family a chance to unwind from the day-to-day stress and create new adventures and lasting memories. When my boys, Jonathon and Jordan were younger we were always looking for family fun things to do without breaking the bank. Even when vacationing we tried to stay on a budget and incorporate activities that were free for locals and visitors alike. Some of our best family memories were trying out local outdoor experiences.

Here is my list of some fun, frugal and local approved outdoor things to do with your kids in Georgetown, KY!

1.) Outdoor Parks
Our local parks are totally free to the public and many have playgrounds (inclusive playgrounds too), skate parks, walking trails, and wildlife that the kids will absolutely love. Be sure to pack your own picnic for extra savings! Spending time at a park is a great way of getting your kids outside in the fresh air and open spaces.

2.) Water Fun at a Creek/Pond
Summer days can get pretty warm and sticky but finding a body of water is a great way to cool off and have a full day of fun in the sun. A wading creek or pond is a free fun way to get the kids out exploring and enjoying nature. Don’t forget to bring along the fishing poles, bug nets and tadpole containers! Save the date: August 7th is the Annual Elkhorn Creek Float Festival.

3.) Farmers’ Market
The Georgetown/Scott County Farmers Market, open every Saturday morning, sells fresh seasonal produce, flowers, prepared foods, unique Kentucky-made products and rare finds. It is not just an opportunity to support local farmers but so much more. It is a learning experience for kids. Farmers are proud of what they do and love to talk about it. Encourage your kids to ask questions!

4.) A Night Out
Georgetown/Scott County has lots of kid friendly free events that you and your children will love going to in the evening. Locals and visitors alike gather together monthly for Movies in the Park and the Party in the Park Concert Series. It is BYOK… Bring Your Own Kid and chair!

5.) Treasure Hunting
Scott County is home to two  Geocaching Trails, the process of finding new and interesting places is sure to entertain the kids. The trails take you all over Georgetown, Stamping Ground, and Sadieville. Once you locate the hidden "caches'', you may trade trinkets of equal or greater value along the way. Passports are available for download here.

6.) Historic Marker Tour
Discover the past by locating historic markers and following clues to hunt down local history in Historic Downtown Georgetown. The markers call attention to and recognize special persons, places and events. You join the hunt by downloading the Kids Downtown Scavenger Tour

7.) Hiking
Hiking at the Veterans Wildlife Management area or at Skullbuster (you can hike or mountain bike) with kids is an awesome way for them to learn about nature and the importance of preserving the area for future generations. The kids will love the sense of adventure it brings. While hiking, create some games that will keep them engaged, have them look for signs of wildlife (scat… yes even that, bird holes, fur, and feathers) or count different wildflower species.

Now that I have shared some of my favorite frugal outdoor tips with you, I challenge you to get out there with your kids this summer and explore! I would love to hear from you, share your adventures by using one of these tags @gotogtown | @DowntownGtownKY | #gotogtown.

Georgetown's Destination Wedding Guide
Beautiful historic churches, vintage barns, a full-on traditional Irish pub, rolling farmland and color-splashed gardens – for couples exchanging “I Do’s,” Georgetown, KY has so many distinctive and scenic settings, along with all the services the bride and groom need to make their day their very own, from flowers to rings to lodging.
Play On Gtown's Waterways
At 285 square miles, Scott County may be small, but its waterways – all 3.7 square miles of them – are mighty. (For comparison: Kentucky’s largest county, Pike, spreads over nearly 787 square miles and has only 1.8 square miles of water.)
Barbara Fox - Life Is A Treasure Hunt
Do you think outlaw Jesse James – infamous for stealing treasure via train robberies and bank heists – ever thought he’d be a clue on someone else’s quest for treasure? Probably not, but nearly 135 years after hanging up his Colt .45 Peacemakers, that is exactly what happened...
Gray Arbor Farm

From big box to bouquets, Chris and Kelly Stanley, owners of seasonal specialty-cut flower farm Gray Arbor Farm, traded in their power couple career in retail for life on a farm.
Stamping Ground Bake Shoppe

The SG Bake Shoppe only recently had its grand opening, but months of hard work and TLC have gone into transforming the space in one of Stamping Ground’s newest locally owned businesses.
Best Western Plus & Comfort Suites

The Best Western Plus Georgetown Corporate Center and the Comfort Suites are Darby Street neighbors, located just two miles outside of Georgetown’s historic downtown district. Both offer a full menu of amenities, including fitness facility, free parking and indoor heated pool (in fact, the one at Best Western Plus is the largest in Georgetown). Each is surrounded by a choice of well-known restaurants like Cracker Barrel, Ruby Tuesday and Fazoli’s Italian.
Georgetown/Scott County Tourism is working hard to gather the most accurate and up to date opening dates, days and hours of operation from our local businesses and attractions in order to support their reopening throughout uncertain conditions.
