A Note from Scott and Marsha
November 12, 2020
I'm sitting here looking outside at the gray, dreary morning. How are hurricanes still spawning in the Atlantic? Nobody needs this right now and certainly not beyond November 1st when hurricane season is supposed to be over. But did anyone really think we would exit 2020 without more drama? Insert fashionable eye roll here.

Beyond all the bad news, a silver lining story. The Garden Center staff continues to grow at FGS. Let me introduce our new Department Sales Lead for pottery and hardgoods. Meet Mariah Jefferson, our newest addition! Mariah has been in the Raleigh area for two years with her partner, Nat. Mariah has jumped right in with both feet. She even had a shout-out on one of our reviews for helping a customer with their planter. It is inevitable. Once you start learning your way around plants, it is the most fun to help create a beautiful planter with our selection of gorgeous pottery. Mariah is having a ball learning the ins and outs as well as working with our current vendors. I promise you will love her as much as we do when you meet her. Her bubbly personality is contagious.

The other silver lining to this story is the 40' storage container we ordered. For those of you who haven't shopped with us as long as others, storage is always an issue. At one point years ago, our retail store was literally the small room with the brick floor and no outdoor checkout area. The rest of the house was office space. We were shoved in there like sardines stepping over everything and everyone in our path.

If you had told us 5 years ago we would need a storage container and would be excited about it, I would have said you're crazy. Now, we simply need it and when I say "need", it's a strong need. When I don't have to convince Scott of an idea, I know it's a serious need. This was a no-brainer. Side note, I am still working on him for hot cider and donuts from September to December. I might need a little more help from my friends. I say flood his in-box if you support this endeavor for 2021.

Back to the container ... how will we hide it? That isn't possible. But we will figure out how to dress it up. Maybe I can line it with Christmas lights like Clark Griswold's house in Christmas Vacation.  We will think of something I'm sure. And when we don't need it anymore...maybe tiny office space? By the back lake under the canopy of trees? Yes, please.

We are setting up all the tree stand holders for Christmas trees arriving Monday, November 16th!! Cue the Christmas music! All things red and green are on their way and we are excited and ready to spread some holiday cheer.  We will be merry and bright this year even if it kills us!
The Holidays are COMING!!

GARDEN CENTER FEATURES
JUDY'S HOUSE PLANT PICK
Succulents are some of our favorite houseplants. They really are low-maintenance, but we do hear that some find succulents to be a challenge. Y'all! 9 times out of 10, you are watering too much. Succulents don't need a lot of water!! Make a schedule (like once a month) for watering, and stick to it! We have many succulent varieties in stock including Haworthia, cacti and Echeveria.
PIERIS
Pieris varieties are beautiful evergreen shrubs that come in a variety of sizes. Pieris is known by the common names, 'Lily of the Valley' and 'Temple Bells' for the bell-shaped blooms, either white or pink, depending on the variety. Smaller Pieris are perfect for container or border planting, while larger varieties can be used for foundation planting. Plant in part-shade, but consider morning sun rather than afternoon.
AMERICAN WINTERGREEN
American Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) are perfect for the holiday! American Wintergreen is an evergreen native groundcover that performs best in part shade. Both the leaves and the bright, red berries smell like wintergreen when crushed! The berries are also edible...fresh breath, anyone? Eat alone or use in pastries or salads. Plant in the ground or in a container.
