Growing green when everything is brown | As summer heats up and the landscape turns brown, many gardeners and homeowners wonder how to keep their spaces lush and thriving. The Cabarrus County Cooperative Extension Office is here to help with expert advice, resources and classes on various topics, including gardening, planting, composting, livestock care, pesticide use and more. | |
Quick tips for growing green from Cooperative Extension Agent Payton Berry:
- If you haven't considered drip irrigation for your garden, now is the time to start looking. Drip irrigation is a wonderful way to save on water and make sure your plants are getting what they need during the summer season. If you set up your drip irrigation system with a timer in your garden, it can be sustainable on its own.
- Please note that tomatoes need about one and a half inches of water per week. It's good practice to water early in the morning before the heat sets in.
- Remember to check what's in season before you plant from seed. July is a wonderful time to start thinking about what you would like to plant in the fall. To prevent disease when watering your plants, make sure you're directly watering the soil, not the plant.

New episode of 'Did Y'all Hear?' Podcast
You’ll find plenty of interesting things on the 600-plus acres of diverse land off St. Stephens Church Road. The site near Mt. Pleasant will be the home of a new County nature park. It offers a variety of unique natural features.
But something else has drawn interest, and it’s not so natural: Several hundred feet of meticulously stacked stone walls. The structures have puzzled County workers and residents.
There are plenty of questions, but two things are clear: Whoever built those walls put in a lot of time. And they did a great job—the walls have stood the test of time.
We went on a field trip to see the walls firsthand (photo above), then sat down with CabCo team members and property neighbors to get some answers to the St. Stephens Rock Wall Mystery.
If you can help us with the mystery, email host Dominique Clark

The facility has applied to the N.C. Division of Air Quality (DAQ) to modify its permit to increase emissions. The facility is proposing to increase its use of isopropyl alcohol, a cleaning agent, at the site. This would result in a 40-tons-per-year increase in emissions of volatile organic compounds.
