School Gardens: Request Soil, Lumber, Mulch

K-12 DOE public and charter schools who want to receive garden soil, mulch, and/or lumber from GrowNYC for their school gardens and outdoor learning spaces can fill out this interest form. We have limited capacity and anticipate not being able to fulfill all requests. Schools will be prioritized based on highest economic need index, the school's intended use of the materials, schools who have not received materials previously, and underserved geographic zones.

If you would like to have a delivery for your school, please follow the link to read all the requirements and fill out the form. Schools must have an up-to-date registration with GrowNYC. The deadline to apply is October 31, 2022, or while supplies last.

Zero Waste Schools

Curbside Composting

We are thrilled to announce that Curbside Composting (aka Organics Collection) is expanding! This year, all DOE K-12 schools in the Bronx will switch to Curbside Composting Collection service, either in the fall (starting Oct 17) or spring (starting Mar 6).

These Bronx schools will join over 850 other DOE schools already receiving daily collections of food waste and food soiled paper from the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY). And just like we've done for schools for the last 10 years, GrowNYC ZWS will help all the new Bronx enrolled schools achieve Zero Waste goals through education, training, and support. We'll be there to help folks figure out how to sort food waste and food soiled paper along with metals, glass, cartons and hard plastics in the cafeterias.

Youth Leadership Council

Looking to help your students boost their resumes, build leadership skills, network with sustainability practitioners and gain real-world experience? Invite them to apply to the GrowNYC Zero Waste Schools Youth Leadership Council.

Reach out to us at zerowasteschools@grownyc.org if you have questions about the program or the application process. Half of our sessions will be in-person and the other half will be virtual.

Application Deadline: Friday, October 21st at 11:59pm.

New Curriculum

This free 12-lesson curriculum is specifically designed for NYC high school students, although it could be adapted for other groups!

The Farmstand Business curriculum empowers school communities to take a meaningful look at our food system, to evaluate the growing capacity at their individual schools, and examines the model GrowNYC has used for over 50 years to support food access in New York City. It allows your school to reach beyond the perimeter of your school garden and onto plates in your communities, while allowing your students to learn real-world business skills.
