A full house says thank you to the Kyncl family
Thank You Kyncls
for Giving 17 years to Love Wins

It was a beautiful day at 700 Chautauqua. The weather outside reflected the mood inside of the 2:8 House.  On May 2nd, the 2:8 Board, volunteers and friends gathered to say thank you and farewell.  While the Kyncl family is not leaving Norman, they have transitioned to be in full-time positions at OU. They have given 17 years of their lives to a place, but more so to an ideal.

Dr. Carl Summer gave remarks on the beginning of their time at the OU Nazarene Student Center ministry.  He emphasized the work of God in placing the Kyncls in Norman for this ministry.  Dr. Jim Cooper also highlighted the spirit of the family in giving themselves to the ideal of LOVE WINS. The 2:8 Board also made an official resolution part of public record to thank and acknowledge the service of the Kyncls to this ministry.  Dr. Martha Banz, Board President, also gave remarks and presented the family with a Scott Stearman statue and gifts.

Nostalgically, during the reception warm fellowship and great food were shared among the guests.  These two things are indicative of the ministry legacy left by the Kyncls. Thanks again to their family and "Love Wins".

Recovery Group Meets for Last time

Last Thursday was a significant moment in the life of the 2:8 House. We celebrated the final meeting of our recovery group. The event was held at Reeves Park on a beautiful evening.  Those of us who had been meeting through out the last 4 years met to share a great time of fun and hotdogs. As the group began to share about their journey with recovery at the 2:8 House, it was evident that the Lord had been at work in many lives through this type of journey. In fact, one of our members celebrated by taking their 2-year sobriety chip. It was evident by the words shared that each person had been looking for respite in their lives from hurts, habits and hang-ups.They had found that renewal in relationship with Christ and the community of the 2:8 House.

Thursday recovery night has been ongoing at the student center for 4 years. The purpose of the group was to engage in discipleship through the 12 steps of recovery with Christ as the higher power. It began with the Kyncls and Shepperds  and one of our board members attending Celebrate Recovery to be trained as leaders. After a couple of weeks it became very clear that our own need of recovery became the goal above and beyond the goals of being trained to lead recovery.  The transformation began in each of us and we saw it continue by the power of Christ in others. Seeing this journey at the 2:8 House come to completion evokes a sense of sadness, but also of great gratitude for the work God has done in the lives of students. While the group has been small, there has been such deep transformation of life.

In concluding the evening, the group was left with the charge of the final step in recovery."Having had a spiritual experience as a result of these steps, we try to carry this message to others and practice these principles in all our affairs."

Graduations Galore, Goodbyes, and Gratefulness

University ministry is all about relationship and connecting. What happens after four years?  Students graduate, say goodbye, and we are grateful for the relationships that were built. The graduates move on, but what happens to the ministry? One might say that is stays the same, constant.  Truthfully, the ministry is as unique as those that are a part of it. When the graduates begin a new chapter, the story of the ministry also begins a new chapter. Often these new chapters can feel unsettling as if the book is being rewritten. This is the nature of campus ministry.

We've concluded another year and have a seen a great group of students graduate as well as the Kyncls move to other responsibilities. We are grateful for the relationships made. Now, it's time to get busy and think about the unique stories we will encounter with the new class of 2015. We are  re envisioning and uniquely planning as to how the 2:8 House will reach this new group of students.  The board and staff are working together to begin a new plan for this fall. Please be in prayer for us and continue to support the efforts of the 2:8 during the summer months.

Serenity Prayer
Each week the recovery prayer concluded with this prayer.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change and the courage to the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.  Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time. Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace. Taking as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.Trusting that you will make all things right, If I surrender to your will so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with you forever in the next."

Curriculum that Speaks to Millenials

Recommended by Anita Shepperd (campus ministry staff & small group leader)

This semester I have been privileged to participate with 5 University students.  We are doing a small group focused on applying biblical principles in practical ways. The curriculum is one of the experiment series book from The House.  Each week we choose an experiment of the week that teaches how to be a a follower of Christ.   Three words describe this experience. Challenging. Fun. Transforming.  If you are working with students check out this  curriculum from our Nazarene sources.
