Greetings From Grimey's

I feel like Steve Martin in The Jerk... THE LIST IS HERE! THE LIST IS HERE! Yep, the fine folks at Record Store Day just released the official list of Black Friday exclusives coming on November 29th. Lots of goodies there for the vinyl-inclined but there is one release in particular that we're jazzed about: Dawes - Stripped Down At Grimey's! Six songs recorded live at Dawes' in-store back in March and released on orange vinyl and CD! Isn't it pretty?

Check that list out and start making your list for Black Friday! We open at 10am on November 29th and we'll have all the titles on the list and more.

Did you hear? Kanye West announced a Nashville show on his upcoming Yeezus tour, for November 27th at Bridgestone Arena with Kendrick Lamar. We're giving away a pair of good tickets ($90 tier) that you can register to win in the store. If you need to see this show and don't want to wait to find out if you won free tickets, we will have a special presale to share with you. Please follow us on twitter or like us on facebook and watch for details. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday but we'll have a link and password for a presale that begins at 10am on Thursday.

I'd like to shout out and thank our friends at Light In The Attic Records who hit us up last week as part of their 2013 roadtrip. We have just about every LITA vinyl release in stock at the moment so don't sleep.

We announce a few more in-stores today including Band Of Heathens on Halloween, Mystery Twins on Nov. 5 and Wooden Wand on Nov. 9. Details below.

In-Stores are all free and all ages, always. Come rock with us.

J RODDY WALSTON & The Business - Saturday, October 26th @ 5PM
J. Roddy Walston and The Business - comprising vocalist, guitarist and pianist J, Roddy Walston, lead guitarist and vocalist Billy Gordon, bassist and vocalist Logan Davis and drummer Steve Colmus - began playing together when Walston moved from the southern church town of Cleveland, Tennessee to Baltimore. They since have earned their fans through what SPIN articulates as "full of spirited and sweaty Southern rock." They have toured with The Hold Steady, Murder by Death, and Deer Tick to name a few. The band recorded "Essential Tremors" at Soil of the South Studios in Georgia with Mark Neill, the Grammy-winning producer and engineer of Black Keys' "Brothers", and Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit). Walston & The Business are in town to tear it up at Exit/In and we got them for what will be a very appropriate in-store, during beer:30!

TRISTEN - Tuesday, October 29th @ 6PM
Tristen's sharp-witted lyrical savvy and sophisticated songcraft, her innate ability to defy expectations will leave you hanging on her every note. Over the last few years in Nashville Tristen has built up her chops and experimented with ideas in a competitive incubator of exceptional musicians and songwriters, while waiting tables and living hand-to-mouth to tour on a shoestring budget. Her sound has evolved considerably since her debut "Charlatans At The Garden Gate." New album "Caves" is the sound of her defining that voice for the world, and setting it to some sleek, club-centric, synth-pop-inspired tones, once again defying expectations. We love Tristen and we're very excited to have her back at Grimey's, playing on the day the vinyl for her new album is released!

BAND OF HEATHENS - Thursday, October 31 @ 6PM
Join us for a special spooky Halloween in-store with Band Of Heathens from Austin TX. BoH are an imposing live band as evidenced by their decision to release 2 live albums to start their recording career. Studio albums soon followed, with production from Ray Wylie Hubbard, and accolades from No Depression, Uncut and Austin Chronicle: "ready-made for sitting on the back porch with a cold beer, a rock 'n' soul affair evocative of Little Feat, The Band and The Black Crowes", among others. Their latest album "Sunday Morning Record" finds the band re-defining their sound after a line-up change, opening up to more of a retro feel with Beatle-esque touches and a classic '70s country-rock sound. Band Of Heathens are in town to rock it out at the High Watt and we've got 'em earlier in the evening for a free, all ages set in the store. We'll also have free beer! so come on over in costume and start your Halloween at Grimey's.

MYSTERY TWINS - Tuesday, November 5th @ 6PM

Doug Lehmann and Stephanie Brush craft concise no frills songs, while performing them in similar fashion. The Everly Brothers vs. Reigning Sound. After over a decade of playing together as one half of Nashville based band The Clutters, a band that garnered public praise from the likes of David Fricke of Rolling Stone and film director Cameron Crowe, Doug and Stephanie are stripping it all back, opening wounds and letting it all bleed on their Mystery Twins debut full-length "Ghost In The Ground." The new album is out Nov. 5 and we'll have Doug and Stephanie performing at Grimey's on the day it's released! Mystery Twins will also celebrate their new album's release with a show at the Stone Fox on Nov. 8.

Mystery Twins website

WOODEN WAND - Saturday, November 9th @ 5PM
Wooden Wand is the sometimes nom de rock of James Jackson Toth. "In recent years, Toth has been unleashing fuzzed-out rockers in the spirit of Neil Young, a guy who knows a thing or two about wandering. It sort of began with 'Briarwood' in 2011, but solidified with the excellent 'Blood Oaths of the New Blues', which came out at the beginning of this year. Now, we already have Wooden Wand & The World War IV with a self-titled record featuring what's become Toth's own Crazy Horse: a crew of Birmingham, AL, musicians who lock in like a hound around the neck of a boar." --NPR. The new album is a vinyl-only affair (with download) and is divided between a ruthlessly economical post-punk Side A, scrubbed of keyboards and excess, and a side B dominated by colossal '70s-style stadium jams. Join us for beer:30 and we'll hoist cold ones while getting our faces melted.

Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of the new releases hitting the racks at Grimey's.

Best Coast - Fade Away CDEP/12" (Jewel City)

Fade Away features seven tracks including two previously released for a Record Store Day single, "Fear Of My Identity" and "Who Have I Become."

Brett Dennen - Smoke And Mirrors CD (Atlantic)

"It was time to get back to basics," Brett Dennen says of his fifth record, Smoke And Mirrors. "I wanted to return to the folk and acoustic music I loved when I began writing. I decided to tap into my memories and explore new emotional territory as honestly as I could."

Polia - Shulamith CD (Mom + Pop)

Shulamith is Polia's second album of super slick electronic pop/soul.

Matthew E. White - Big Inner: Outer Face Edition 2xCD (Domino)

If Matthew E. White's Big Inner cut a canyon in the landscape of modern music, Outer Face is the wind sweeping through it. White's five-song EP tells the story of now (and of what's next) in a new maximal language of minimal voices: percussion, strings, bass, and choir, alone, erupt as White sings us through the sensual and spiritual world terraformed by Big Inner -- and into outer space.

Brandy Clark - 12 Stories CD (Slate Creek)

The debut album from the country singer/songwriter is full of diverse characters and stays true to Brandy's self-proclaimed dark comedy theme.

Linda Thompson - Won't Be Long Now CD/LP (Pettifer Sounds)

A mix of traditional and original songs, including songs co-written by Linda with Ron Sexsmith, John Doyle and her son Teddy Thompson. Ex-husband Richard appears as well.

Anoushka Shankar - Traces Of You CD (Deutsche Grammophon)

Traces Of You draws on Indian classical ragas, Western classical string arrangements, mid-20th century-style lyrics of extended poetry and modern soundscapes. Norah Jones appears on three songs.

Omar Souleyman - Wenu, Wenu CD/LP (Ribbon)

Following a series of three compilations and a live release, Wenu, Wenu marks Omar Souleyman's first studio album. Produced by Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and recorded primarily live in the studio, the album distills the artist's enthralling live performance into a recorded fury of ascending and descending techno scales punctuated by the voice of its creator.

Radical Face - The Family Tree: The Branches CD (Nettwerk)

The second installment of a three-part, stand-alone album series that chronicles a fictitious, and sometimes otherworldly, 19th century family. As such, Ben Cooper, aka Radical Face limits his songwriting to century instruments from the 1800s piano, acoustic guitar, floor torn and haunting vocal harmonies. Vinyl version due October 29.

Black Hearted Brother - Stars Are Our Home CD (Slumberland)

New space-rock project featuring Neil Halstead (Slowdive/Mojavi 3) and Mark Van Hoen (Seefeel).

Machinedrum - Vapor City CD/LP (Ninja Tune)

Nocturnal jungle soundscapes 'n' panoramic rhythms from this member of Sepalcure. Recommended for fans of Prefuse 73 and Burial. Dresses - Sun Shy CD/LP (Side One Dummy) Debut album from Portland indie-pop duo.

Motrhead - Aftershock CD (UDR)

Motrhead's 21st album is a crushing confirmation of everything they stand for. There's swagger, there's punch, there's speed and there's dirty filthy grooves. Vinyl version due October 29.

Def Leppard - Viva! Hysteria 2xCD+DVD (Frontiers)

Def Leppard played their album Hysteria in its entirety during an eleven-show residency which started on March 22, 2013 at The Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel And Casino in Las Vegas. Also available on stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray.

Emphatic - Another Life CD (Epochal)

New album from the Omaha, Nebraska based hard rockers. Another Life showcases Emphatic's newfound sense of maturity and creative firepower as they belt out a powerful dose of groundbreaking hard rock.

AFI - Burials CD/LP (Universal Republic)

The Cali-based band recorded their ninth album with producer Gil Norton (Pixies, Patti Smith, Foo Fighters) at East West Studios in Los Angeles.

Katy Perry - Prism CD

Katy Perry returns with a shimmering new album that includes her latest, #1 single, "Roar." Available in Regular and Deluxe editions. Deluxe adds three bonus tracks. Vinyl due December 10.

Reissues & From The Archive...

Van Morrison - Moondance [Expanded Edition] 2xCD (Rhino)

Van Morrison - Moondance [Deluxe Edition] 4xCD+Blu-ray (Rhino)

The Deluxe Edition includes the remastered version of the original 1970 album, three discs of previously unreleased music from the sessions, a Blu-ray Audio disc with high-resolution 48K 24 bit PCM stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound audio of original album (no video). The package is presented in a linen-wrapped folio Includes a booklet with liner notes from Alan Light and original engineer Elliot Scheiner. The double-disc Expanded Edition includes the remastered album plus 11 previously unreleased tracks (highlights from the Deluxe Edition).

Robin Trower - State to State: Live Across America 2xCD (WEA)

This collection features 24 previously unreleased live performances recorded in Philadelphia and California (1974), Illinois (1976), Oklahoma (1977) and Missouri (1980). Among the standout tracks are several songs from his gold-certified breakthrough Bridge Of Sighs (1974), including "Too Rolling Stoned" and "Day Of The Eagle."

Vinyl...

Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children [Reissue/1998] 2xLP+MP3 (Warp)

Boards Of Canada - Geogaddi [Reissue/2001] 2xLP+MP3 (Warp)

Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase [Reissue/2005] 2xLP+MP3 (Warp)

Back in print on vinyl! Additional reissues (Twoism, In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country, and Trans Canada Highway) due November 19.

David Bowie - Sorrow [40th Anniversary Picture Disc] 7" (Parlophone)

Originally released in October 1973, "Sorrow" was Bowie's inimitable take on The MerseyBeats' version of the song. The single reached #3 in UK, staying in the charts for 15 weeks, and also appeared on Bowie's 1973 covers album, Pin Ups. B-side is a rare live version of 'Sorrow' recorded at the Pacific National Coliseum, Vancouver, from David's hugely successful Serious Moonlight Tour on 12th September 1983.

Matthew E. White - Outer Face 12" (Domino)

J Roddy Walston & The Business - J Roddy Walston & The Business [2010] LP (Vagrant)

Sophomore album -- first time on vinyl! Influences include: Mungo Jerry, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Harry Nilsson, The Band, Huey Lewis And The News, Charlie Roddy, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Marshall Crenshaw, Bearclaw, The Features, Leon Russell, Faces, and Queen.

Haim - Days Are Gone LP (Columbia)
Recently releases on CD - now available on vinyl. Days Are Gone is the highly anticipated debut album from breakout band Haim. The Southern California trio has attracted a surge of industry attention since releasing their EPs Forever, Don t Save Me and Falling.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Made Up Mind LP (Sony Masterworks)

Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. TTB is known for their extraordinary family of musicians, and Made Up Mind continues that tradition as most tracks were penned by husband-and-wife Tedeschi and Trucks along with various friends and co-writers Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Krasno, Gary Lour's, John Leventhal all of whom also contributed to TTB's debut Revelator. The album was also co-produced by Jim Scott (Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco) and Trucks, and engineered by Bobby Tis -- the same team that developed the last two TTB albums.

The Fratellis - We Need Medicine LP (BMG)

Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. We Need Medicine, recorded in Glasgow's West End and produced by Jon Fratelli and Stuart McCredie, who also mixed the record, is an 11-track record of bluesy rock anthems. The single "Seven Nights Seven Days" is a rousing anthem with a classic Fratellis chorus backed by country guitars, while the title track is a gravelly, piano-led blues song that you can't help but sing along to and is sure to be a live favorite. Free lithograph with purchase - while supplies last!

The Weeknd - Kiss Land LP (Universal)

Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. Kiss Land follows up his unanimously celebrated platinum-selling 2012 debut, Trilogy. Tapping into that same signature mystique, the album is an elegant pastiche of love, longing, and lust set to a futuristic soundtrack of shimmering keys, disruptive synths, and airy atmospherics. It's dark. It's dangerous. It's decidedly sexy.

Panic! At The Disco - Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die! LP (Fueled By Ramen)

Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. Produced by Butch Walker (Fall Out Boy, Weezer), Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!! sees the band paying homage to their Las Vegas roots via a glittery sonic approach inspired by their ever-- increasing collection of vintage and modern synthesizers. While jam-- packed with high-- energy songs like "Vegas Lights" and "Nicotine," the album also features Urie's most open and introspective songwriting to date, with highlights including the tender paean that closes the collection, "The End Of All Things. "

Royal Bangs - Brass LP (Modern Art)

Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. Brass is the Knoxville-based band's fourth full-length release and follows 2011's Flux Outside. It was produced by The Black Keys' Patrick Carney. "There are flavors as far ranging as Ben Folds Five with all the deliciously fuzzy bass to Radiohead and the Replacements. The guitar work in the opening of 'Hope We Don't Crash' recalled Joy Division for a moment before the song morphed into more of an indie-rock anthem." - Premier Guitar

Lissie - Back To Forever LP (Fat Possum)

Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. "Lissie is as earnest as they come - and on her second studio album, Back To Forever, the singer/songwriter bares her soul even more. Opener 'The Habit' builds with alluring piano and charging bass drum, erupting into a swift chorus of dancing hi-hats and churning guitars. The Illinois native shows some snarl on 'Shameless,' riding the track's pugnacious bob-and-weaves: 'I see you look at me/ I swear that it is bugging me,' she sneers. 'What the f##k?'" - Rolling Stone.

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - Unvarnished LP (Blackheart Records)

Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. Unvarnished is Joan Jett & The Blackhearts first studio record in more than seven years. Jett teamed up with some stellar collaborators on Unvarnished including Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!, Dave Grohl, Blackheart band members Dougie Needles and Thommy Price, and longtime songwriting partner/producer, Kenny Laguna.

Goblin - Goblin Tour 2013 12" (Death Waltz)

The legendary Italian band recently reformed and went back into the studio to re-record four classic tracks exclusively for this EP, treating the originals with the reverence they deserve but updating them to sound more in line with their current live set up.

The Strawberry Alarm Clock - The World In A Sea Shell [Reissue/1968] LP (Sundazed)

The Strawberry Alarm Clock - Wake Up It's Tomorrow [Reissue/1968] LP (Sundazed)

The Strawberry Alarm Clock - The Best Of Strawberry Alarm Clock [Reissue/1970]LP (Sundazed)

HQ-180gm vinyl reissues now available. "Strawberry Alarm Clock occupies a peculiar niche in the history of '60s rock. Their name is as well known to anyone who lived through the late-'60s psychedelic era as that of almost any group one would care to mention, mostly out of its sheer, silly trippiness as a name and their one major hit, 'Incense And Peppermints,' which today is virtually the tonal equivalent of a Summer Of Love flashback. But there was a real group there, with members who had played for a long time on the Southern California band scene, who were proficient on their instruments and who sang well and generated four whole LPs of which at least three were worth hearing more than once." - AllMusic

Various Artists [Four Tet] - Late Night Tales [2004] 2xLP+MP3 (Late Night Tales)

Originally released in 2004, this mix has gone on to be a classic Late Night Tales release. For it's vinyl debut, the record has been carefully remastered and cut at half speed for optimum sonic reproduction.

The Velcro Lewis Group - Open The Sky LP+MP3 (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond)

Funk rock occultists, The Velcro Lewis Group, bring the harmonies of Motown, the groove of Stax, the drugs of Hawkwind, and the drive of Bohannon to their own LSD-laced BBQ of sound.

Cairo Gang - Tiny Rebels LP (Empty Cellar)

Tiny Rebels is a new collection of songs that showcase the economical songwriting of bandleader Emmett Kelly. Recorded in a week, the album is an epiphany of sorts, the boiling point at which Kelly surrendered in one sense, but obliterated in another.

Dead Gaze - Brain Holiday LP (FatCat)

Brain Holiday is the debut album proper from Dead Gaze, following on from the acclaimed self-titled compilation released by FatCat imprint Palmist in March. It is a confident and ambitious album, which places Cole Furlow's songwriting ability front and center; the move from recording in his bedroom to the famous Sweet Tea studio in Oxford, Mississippi allowing a talented composer of pop songs to emerge from the fuzz that characterized his earlier recordings.

ExWife - New Colors LP (Evil Weevil)

Dealing with the depressing reality of the present, as the cheerful nostalgia of youth has been pushed to the past, ExWife take influence from loud rock bands like Pissed Jeans and Bleach-era Nirvana as their cue to put together one helluva solid LP.

Kiki Pau - Pines LP (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond)

The Finnish band, Kiki Pau, channeled some serious magic with their third album, as they morphed from a more conventional indie rock band to a band without boundaries. With the help of Dungen's Gustav Ejstes at the mixing board, this is sonically one of the most amazing albums that you'll hear in a long time.

Quilt/MMOSS - New Hampshire Freaks 10" (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond)

Quilt combine traditional folk vocal harmonies, reverb-drenched fingerpicking and meditative drum repetition in a patchwork of eclectic psych-folk. MMOSS deliver soaring melodies and graceful vocal harmonies, but they can also wander into fiercer, exploratory space, fusing lo-fi '60s rock with British folk and spaced out motorik kraut journeys.

DVDs & Blu-ray...

Morrissey - 25 Live DVD/Blu-ray (Eagle Vision)

The first authorized Morrissey film for nine years and featuring many classic tracks from the artist's prolific repertoire. Shot during Morrissey's most intimate gig in decades at the Hollywood High School in Los Angeles on March 2nd, 2013, the film opens with fans talking about their unwavering devotion to the singer and the unique appeal of this unusual venue a striking contrast to the sold out arena concert at the Staples Center on the previous night. 116 minutes.

Sara Bareilles - Brave Enough: Live At The Variety Playhouse DVD+CD (Epic)

Sara's entire May 20, 2013 performance -- which features set highlight and never-before released cover of Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." 90 minutes.

10% DISCOUNT on Preloved Merchandise EVERY Monday!
To paraphrase Booker T. & The MG's, Times Is Tight. We know. We're feeling it too. So to help you out and, hopefully, to help us out, we'd like to try a new concept - the weekly discount. We're going to start by offering a 10% discount on ALL PRELOVED MERCHANDISE (i.e. used stuff) every Monday from open to close. Come in on Mondays and everything in the store that's preloved (ahem, used) will be 10% OFF, every Monday (excluding dollar LPs and CDs under $5).

Grimey's Incredibly Fantastic Trade-in of Unwanted Presents
(or GIFT-UP) Program*
In case you didn't know, we do this goofy thing where we will trade you a
happy Grimey's Gift Certificate for one of the crappy ones you got for
whatever occasion from some unknowing, but well-meaning, relative or friend.
We actually do this gift card exchange thing all through the year because we
don't stop caring about you once December ends, but I only bring it up now
because it's, you know, that time of year when people are in a gift-giving
frenzy but are short on time/energy/ideas, etc. While Grimey's can't do
anything about that sweater with reindeers on it or that smelly candle in
the shape of an evergreen or those tins of stale nougat, we can help with
those unwanted corporate gift cards*.

If you've received some corporate gift cards* that you don't want, stop by
the store and we'll take them and turn them into something you can use -- a
GRIMEY'S GIFT CERTIFICATE. (One of our awesome gift certs will be issued for
an amount equal to the current value of the competitor's gift card upon
verification.) Just bring your unwanted gift card to the front counter
before you start shopping, and we'll have a Grimey's gift cert (or store
credit) waiting for you when you're ready to check out. Primarily we're talking about Best Buy, Target, Walmart and Amazon gift cards. If you're not sure if yours will qualify just call or email us for more details.

* Yes, of course, there's a catch or three. (1a) The gift card must be from
a chain competitor -- we don't trade on other indie stores' gift cards
because we encourage you to support them too. (1b) Sorry, but we cannot
accept gift cards from any retailer that has announced going out of
business. Also, the chain competitor must at least sell recorded music in
physical formats. So we won't except iTunes gift cards(seriously?). (2) The
gift card's value must be verifiable via phone or the internet. That means
that we can only accept a competitor's gift card if it has an 800-number or
website where the value of the card can be confirmed -- see the back of your
card if you're not sure. (3) The competitor's gift card must not expire for
at least 6 months from the date of exchange. That's it.
