Greensboro College Begins New Year,

New Semester with Convocation,

Commemorations of MLK Day

Happy New Year, GC Family!

As we enter the start of a new year and semester, the college is very excited to see students return from their winter breaks to campus as move-in day is this Saturday.

From the classroom to the cafeteria to the practice facilities, the college is just a weekend away from returning to regular activity which we cannot wait to happen!

As we enter the spring 2024 semester, this is also the final semester for the Class of 2024! As senior activities ramp up, the first opportunity for the community and campus to celebrate its graduating class will be on January 18 at 11:30 a.m. for Student Convocation at the Huggins Performance Center, Odell Memorial Building.

This annual tradition, which will be taking place in January after previously being held towards the end of the semester, will allow graduating seniors to earn their medallions which they will wear as they walk during May's Commencement Ceremony.

There is so much more in store for seniors and all students this semester, and Convocation is a wonderful way to kick off for these next four months!

Greensboro College is also gearing up to celebrate the legacy and dream of Martin Luther King Jr. Day throughout the month of January.

Throughout the month, students, faculty, and staff will be engaged on campus and in the community in discussing and working towards the dream of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement.

On MLK Day, January 15, though offices will be closed, the campus will hold a communal reading and discussion of Dr. King's, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail."

Following that event, students on campus will be working on "Pack a Snack" meals for the local Boys and Girls Club chapter.

On, January 16, the library will be holding a bake sale with proceeds going towards Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a book-giving program that mails free books to children, and the Sankofa Center, an organization on campus that fosters leadership development to incite positive social change, will be leading a MLK Day-themed conversation during lunch.

The group will be discussing the 2023 article, "King Day 2024 is Cancelled," by academic administrator Walter Kimbrough, who argues that the spirit of MLK Day, the only holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all citizens to improve their communities, has been lost and needs to be regained.

In the same vein of the Sankofa Center discussion, the college will also be participating in the MLK Celebration on January 24 which will be presented by several colleges and universities in the area and held at UNCG's Cone Ballroom. The event will be an interactive discussion for students and the community to learn about the importance of activism.

On the next day, January 25, Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale will be visiting the campus to speak on the message, “In 2024, What Would Dr. King Do?,” at Finch Chapel at 11:30 a.m.

Even though MLK Day is designated as the third Monday in January, the college is in lockstep with Dr. King's vision for equality and justice for all every day of the year.

Below, you can see some of the additional highlights of what's been going on around campus during December, the last month of the fall semester and of 2023!

The First Theatre Show of the Spring Semester:

Merrily We Roll Along -

Feb. 22 - 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Merrily We Roll Along tells the story of how three friends' lives and friendship change over the course of 20 years; it focuses particularly on Franklin Shepard, a talented composer of musicals who, over those 20 years, abandons his friends and songwriting career to become a producer of Hollywood movies.

Like the play on which it is based, the show's story moves backward in time, beginning in 1976 at the friends' lowest moment and ending in 1957, at their youthful best.

The show will have its first Broadway revival in fall 2023, starring Jonathan Groff ("King George- Hamilton), Daniel Radcliff ("Harry Potter") and Lindsay Mendez ("Carrie- Carousel").
