Professor Emeritus, David Schram, Returns to Direct Theatre Show in February

As the calendar turns from January to February (or remains on January for another day or two until you remember to flip the calendar), things remain stable and consistent at Greensboro College as we enter the second month of the spring semester.

The early part of January is typically a period of easing back into the routine. Students had their first day of class on January 8, and once they begin their course load for the spring, they hit the ground running, as demonstrated by the ongoing and upcoming performances out of the School of the Arts!

The Art Department has hosted the ongoing art show, "Low" at the Anne Rudd Galyon Gallery, and music students have been busy at work, rehearsing and practicing for their first shows that begin at the end of February.

And out of the Theatre Department is the welcomed return of long-time professor, David Schram, who will be directing the department's first show of the semester, Merrily We Roll Along. The show will be held at the Huggins Performance Center from February 22 - 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Schram, who retired in the spring of 2021 after 32 years with Greensboro College, is temporarily back on campus and spending time in an area which he and several of his colleagues helped build up into a small-college powerhouse.

"We started a program that was not just good for the college, but good for the students," said Schram in the fall 2021 issue of Points of Pride. "They go on using the skills they've learned, and the collaboration, in their later lives. I think John would say we're most proud of those students who have gone on to good things not only in theatre, but also later in life."

Not a day goes by where students aren't hard at work or learning here at Greensboro College. It's a good thing going here at campus, and we invite you to visit our events and athletics calendar to see all of the exciting performances in store from the students here at GC

Below, you can see some of the additional highlights of what's been going on around campus during January, the first month of the spring 2024 semester!

The First Theatre Show of the Spring Semester:

Merrily We Roll Along -

Feb. 22 - 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Merrily We Roll Along tells the story of how three friends' lives and friendship change over the course of 20 years; it focuses particularly on Franklin Shepard, a talented composer of musicals who, over those 20 years, abandons his friends and songwriting career to become a producer of Hollywood movies.

Like the play on which it is based, the show's story moves backward in time, beginning in 1976 at the friends' lowest moment and ending in 1957, at their youthful best.

The show will have its first Broadway revival in fall 2023, starring Jonathan Groff ("King George- Hamilton), Daniel Radcliff ("Harry Potter") and Lindsay Mendez ("Carrie- Carousel").

Greensboro College Faculty and Staff Profile

Brittney Sondberg -

Art Department Chair and Associate Professor of Art

How long have you been at Greensboro College and in your current role?

  • I have been at GC for 7 years, I am an Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Art Department since 2020.

What do you enjoy the most about working at the college?

  • Getting to know my students, their individual interests and approaches to their art.

What has been your favorite memory while at Greensboro College

  • Collaborating with my students during the Contemporary Practices class where we do a project that engages with the wider campus community. Many Art majors are rather introverted, but when running an event like this, they seem to take pride and open up which is fun to see. These projects include things like creating the Zen garden alongside Cowan, organizing and our annual Empty Bowls pottery sale and some of our more successful Social Practice projects.

What was your first professional job?

  • When I was 15 or 16, I started working at the Maryland Renaissance Festival selling dried flower garlands; at the same time I started working in the kitchen at Ledo's Pizza.

What are some of the passions/hobbies you like to pursue outside of work?

  • Other than my sculpture studio practice, I also enjoy gardening/learning more about urban-permaculture, reading, baking, playing video games, learning piano, and writing.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what would be the five items you would bring?

  • A great big sketchbook, pack of pencils, Berkey (a water filter), solar oven, and a comprehensive global philosophy anthology.

If you could see one musician in concert (dead or alive), who would that musician be

  • Nirvana.

What is one thing that most people do not know about you?

  • I have a rather large collection of PEZ dispensers.

Staff, Faculty, Student, and Alumni Recognitions

The following Greensboro College students, alums, staff, and faculty members recently received recognition for their academic, athletic, and professional work:

  • Sophomore, Xypher Pino (right), was selected as one of only eight students for the inaugural cohort of the North Carolina Civic Impact Fellowship. Sponsored by North Carolina Campus Engagement, this fellowship is a statewide program that recognizes exceptional students with demonstrated civic engagement leadership abilities. During his time on campus, Xypher, a native of Clemmons, NC, served as a co-Hunger Ambassador for the NC Collegiate Hunger Challenge, helping to lead the Greensboro College team to victory in securing the Overall Grand Prize of $10,000 for the campus food pantry. Xypher is also a 2023 Community Impact Student Award Recipient.

  • Women's Basketball player, Kensie Harris, was selected by the USA South Athletic Conference as its Rookie of the Week for the week ending on January 29. The first-year guard from Greensboro (a Winston-Salem Christian graduate), averaged a double-double of 20.5 points and 11.5 rebounds, along with averages of 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block in two games the previous week, helping the Pride defeat both Pfeiffer University and Salem College in two conference matchups.

  • Dr. Heather Chacon, Assistant Professor of English, recently presented her research paper, "Black Hair: Historical and Cultural Manifestations vis-à-vis Hair Salon Deregulation," at the 2024 Modern Language Association's 2024 Convention.

  • Women's Basketball coach, Laquanda Prince, earned her 100th career win as a coach in the Pride's, 62-56, victory against Salem College on January 27. Prince began her coaching career at Southern Polytechnic State University and also coached at Elizabeth State University before coming to GC.
