Dear Friends and Fans of Greenlight,
Each year, we at Greenlight Bookstore compile an opinionated "best of" list: the titles we most recommend for reading and holiday giving. We're sharing our list of picks with you via email, one category at a time, and we'll include some holiday ideas, information, and tips in each email as well.
This round is all about
Gift Books: gorgeous, impressive works that look beautiful on a shelf or coffee table, and make a wonderful gesture for a collector or fan. These are great gifts for recipients who deserve something special but may be harder to buy for; there's something to wow everyone on your list.
Click on any book below for easy ordering, or
click here to see the full list in all categories. We hope you'll stop by the store to browse, explore, and discuss. And we'd love to hear about your own favorites on social media, where we'll be discussing the year in books; see left column to find us on Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram or Facebook. Happy reading and giving this holiday season!

by Lucy Dawson
and
by Maira Kalman
Two illustrated books for dog lovers! Maria Kalman recounts her fear and love of dogs in
Beloved Dog
, a folksy but beautiful account which includes past work from her children's books, magazines, and more. For those who might appreciate a more classic look, perhaps the reissue of Lucy Dawson's
Dogs As I See Them
will do the trick. Handwritten notes by Dawson accompany her pastel and graphite sketches which she drew traveling across Britain in search of man's best friend.

by Paul Goldberger
I believe this falls squarely into the category of the perfect dad gift. But squarely isn't really the word for Frank Gehry, now is it? More undulant and without right angles. Renowned architecture critic Paul Goldberger's biography tells the whole story of Frank Gehry from his Toronto roots to his "starchitect" status, providing an intimate look at the man behind the iconoclast, a worthy if at times intractable pursuit. Umberto Eco describes porn as a series of long, boring drives to get to the scene of the action. Fortunately for you, the authors and photographers of
Cabin Porn
skip the boring part and immerse us in the good stuff. Did you ever want to live in a hut like a hobbit, or in a tricked-out tree house like Swiss Family Robinson? Feed your inner Thoreau and wood nymph voyeur as you travel from Sweden to Uganda to Barrington, NY. This is a coffee table book / fantasy manual built to inspire and arouse. Even comes with DIY instructions for building your very own sexy hermitage.

Is there a record collector in your family? A vinyl hound among your close group of friends? This beautiful photography book of personal record collections is the gift for that person in your life, especially because she might already have every album you try to gift her anyway. (Geo)

by Stephen Silverman and Raphael Silver
From early settlement to the iconic Woodstock concert, from Jewish resort towns to gangster hideouts, the Catskills have a history that spans the founding of our country, the entertainment industry, and religion. Underscoring the major (and ever changing) role the Catskills have had on our developing nation over the past 400 years, this is the perfect balance between illustrated coffee table book and comprehensive history - it is a book with meat on its bones! by Melissa Vaughan and Susanne Konig
Best Brooklyn themed gift idea ever: Step 1) Purchase Made in Brooklyn, a guide to artisanal food and drink makers in our beloved borough, for a loved one. Step 2) Read the book, chock full of wonderful photographs and stories, to learn about cool people making cool things in Brooklyn. Step 3) Visit several places and purchase wares to give with the book. Step 4) Wrap the greatest Brooklyn themed gift ever. Step 5) Decide to keep that chocolate you bought for yourself. (Annie)

If you are like me,you love to inspire/punish yourself with bougie, excellent, gorgeous lifestyle magazines and blogs. Meals you can't cook, clothes you can't afford, high-ceiling apartments with 100,004 windows that you can't live in. The rad thing about
Kinfolk
is that in addition to actually achievable recipes and wardrobe tips, you can read sprawling profiles on inspiring, audacious, fly, unconventional thinkers and life live-ers from all around the globe. GLORAY! A fantastic self-care gift for you or your bestie.

edited by Deborah Willis
Questions asked by black men. Answers given by black men. Topics ranging from relationships & sexuality to history & politics. The book is an extension of a forum where thoughtful conversation is welcomed, riveting in its frankness, clear in its execution of being a haven for understanding. (Dante)

A coffee table book shouldn't just be pretty. It should always offer curiosity and maybe a pause in the conversation, a moment for breath.
Jacob A. Riis: Revealing New York's Other Half
is a book to get lost in, to scan each and every face of the past. For any fan of photography or for any fan of distraction.
