Who Must Recycle and Who Must Compost?
Effective July 1, 2012, the State's Mandatory Commercial Recycling law (AB 341) requires all businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of solid waste per week and multifamily residences with 5 units or more to arrange for recycling services. The overall goal of this law is for the State of California to divert 75% of the waste generated from landfills by 2020.
Beginning April 1, 2016, the State's Mandatory Organic Waste Recycling Law (AB 1826) phased in requirements for businesses and multifamily residences that generate specified amounts of organic waste to arrange for recycling services for that material in accordance with the schedule to the right.
If your business is located in the City of San Rafael, Marin Sanitary Service can help your business or multi-family residence comply with California's mandatory commercial recycling and compost laws through a variety of programs, offering expert assistance and providing outreach materials to assist with your business's recycling, composting and waste diversion needs. Learn more about their programs at Marin Sanitary Service - Commercial. Is your business located in another part of Marin? Visit zwmarin.org to find out who the hauler is where you work. And, if your business has food to donate, on a one time or ongoing basis, please contact extrafood.org, a Marin-based nonprofit helping reduce waste and feed the hungry here in the county.
