May 1, 2024

Hi Team,

Please join us next Wednesday, May 8 for Green Drinks at the Williams Inn with Linda Merry: "Northeastern Cliff Swallows: A Conservation Adventure Part II". Some may remember Linda from the August 2022 Pittsfield Green Drinks, where she and Mara Silvers took us on their first conservation adventure: artificial nesting and habitat remediation. We’re excited to welcome back Linda for a discussion of the natural history of the cliff swallow, the current conservation status, efforts to conserve populations, and her ongoing research. Register here to attend the talk in person or online.

Are you a handy person? We want your skills! BEAT is looking for a volunteer to help mouse-proof our Environmental Leadership and Education Center. Contact Jane with your interest, or call our office at (413) 464-9402.

The Story of Stuff Project is seeking participation in the campaign for an updated bottle bill and refill targets in Massachusetts. Submit photos here of littered bottles and cans (including liquor 'nips') to be shared with legislators. Go for a walk in your neighborhood and keep an eye out for the unfortunately very common sight of discarded beverage containers. If you're feeling extra inspired, bring a bag with you and have your own mini cleanup! Learn more about about the Story of Stuff campaign and other actions you can take here.

Finally, a special thank you to all of the volunteers who made our Earth Day great! We are so appreciative to all who came to support our work on restoring our riverbank and advocating to legislators.

If you missed out on the day of volunteering, don't worry! BEAT has plenty of upcoming events for you to mark on your calendar, and we will be seeking volunteers to help out at each of them.

May 25 - Kids in Kayaks

June 1 - Native Plant Swap & Giveaway

June 8 - Berkshire Pride Festival

June 9 - River Cleanup

June 16 - Juneteenth

June 22 - Booth at Pittsfield Farmers Market

That's it for now. Thank you for all you do to protect the environment!

Plastic or plastic? In this store, everything is made from plastic bags - even the food

The Berkshire Eagle

"NORTH ADAMS — In "The Plastic Bag Store," the shelves are stocked with thousands of original, hand-sculpted items — produce and meat, dry goods and toiletries, cakes and sushi rolls — all made from discarded, single-use plastics. Brooklyn-based artist Robin Frohardt addresses global climate concerns through art, humor and a critical lens in this public art installation and immersive film experience coming to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art's Building 1, May 9 through Sept. 2." Monterey residents join ambitious national effort to bring the mighty American chestnut back from functional extinction

Kateri Kosek | iBerkshires

"Monterey — 'You are now all official extension agents of the Granville Research Orchard,” declared John Meiklejohn at a chestnut tree-planting demo and giveaway at the Monterey Community Center on April 20, leading up to both Earth Day and Arbor Day. Many of the two dozen or so attendees had signed up beforehand to receive chestnut seeds to plant at home, courtesy of the orchard where Meiklejohn is a volunteer orchard manager. The nuts were left over from the upwards of 600 the orchard produced last year, most of which were sent to the Virginia headquarters of the American Chestnut Foundation. “If we can start to have extension agents planting them out, keeping in touch with us, we’re able to use more of what we’re producing and not just eat them at Christmas or leave them to the squirrels,' Meiklejohn said..." A New Federal Tool Could Help Cities Prepare for Scorching Summer Heat

Kiley Price | Inside Climate News

"NOAA and the CDC teamed up to create 'HeatRisk,' a tool that can forecast potentially threatening heat up to a week in advance. Medical experts often call heat a 'silent killer' because many people don’t notice the signs of heat stress until it is too late. But as climate change accelerates, the impacts of excessive heat are deafening. Last year, there were nearly 120,000 emergency room visits for heat-related illnesses in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). More than 90 percent of these visits took place between May and September, during the hottest summer on record in the country..." READ MORE

A 'pay-as-you-throw' trash proposal has fizzled before. Will Pittsfield embrace the 'toters' under the latest proposal?

Greg Sukiennik | The Berkshire Eagle

"PITTSFIELD — The city has been down this road before... But the current proposal, which would require residents to place trash and recycling in 48-gallon wheeled containers, has significant differences over past initiatives the council turned down in 2018 and 2021. In the proposal, Casella would distribute free trash and recycling containers on wheels — locally known as "toters" — to city residents, including homeowners and residents of apartment buildings with four units or fewer. All residential trash and recycling would have to go in those containers. Bulk pickups would be arranged with Casella directly. Another key difference is the proposal does not truly become “pay as you throw” unless residents request additional 48-gallon wheeled containers. In that case, residents would pay a fee of about $40 per container every three months to the city. Additional recycling toters would be provided free of charge..." READ MORE

A new fleet of hybrid BRTA buses will reduce emissions and give Berkshire County riders a smoother ride

Matt Martinez | The Berkshire Eagle

"PITTSFIELD — Transit riders in Berkshire County can expect a smoother ride — and more eco-friendly mileage — from a newly acquired fleet of hybrid buses set to hit the streets. Three of the vehicles are ready for action now, and two more will be delivered by the end of the year, said Robert Malnati, administrator of the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority..." READ MORE

Hickory Gall Interlopers

Charley Eiseman | Bug Tracks

"And speaking of beetles associated with galls (which we were, briefly, several weeks ago in my previous post), here’s an odd thing I noticed last May while wandering in the woods of northwestern Connecticut. A lot of the leaves of shagbark hickories (Juglandaceae: Carya ovata) were covered with little round, flattened galls... Nothing too odd about that; galls like these are a common sight on hickories, and they are caused by aphidlike insects called phylloxerans (Phylloxeridae: Phylloxera spp.)..." READ MORE

New rule compels US coal-fired power plants to capture emissions – or shut down

Associated Press | The Guardian

"Coal-fired power plants would be forced to capture smokestack emissions or shut down under a rule issued on Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). New limits on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-fired electric plants are the Biden administration’s most ambitious effort yet to roll back planet-warming pollution from the power sector, the nation’s second-largest contributor to the climate crisis...."
