The Department of State has an annual Diversity Visa ("DV") lottery for immigration to the United States. This program is commonly called the "Green Card Lottery" and the "Visa Lottery" Program.  Under this program, up to 55,000 immigrants can enter the United States each year from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.  One must register for the lottery in order to be selected and must meet the following requirements:

1.   Be born in an Eligible County: Natives from the following countries are excluded from participating in the Green Card lottery program this year:

Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam.
 *Persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan are eligible.

If you were born in a non-qualifying country, you may qualify if:
- Your spouse was born in an eligible county: provided that both you and your spouse are named on the selected entry, are found eligible and issued diversity visas and enter the U.S. at the same time;
You claim nativity in one of your parents' countries of birth if it is a country whose natives are eligible.
