President's Message

Dear Chapter Members,

Happy July! I hope everyone's summer is off to a great, albeit hot & humid, start.

In June we wrapped up yet another stellar DFW Philanthropy in Action Conference. The day was full of networking and learning. Our morning keynote Yolanda F. Johnson shared practical tips on how to really listen and talk with donors. Luncheon keynote Holly Hull Miori had great insights on engaging millennials as volunteers and donors. With more than 40 breakout sessions, some 40 exhibitors, and over 500 attendees our nonprofit community was well represented.

These events would not be possible without the behind-the-scenes work of our dedicated volunteers. Thank you, thank you, thank you to our chair & co-chair Chris Evans and Michael Schwerin, and to all our conference committee members for making this event a reality.

Interested in getting more involved with your AFP chapter? We have a number of volunteer opportunities available: National Philanthropy Day event committee, board leadership, and next year's DFW Philanthropy Conference. Email us if you're interested in learning more about giving back to your profession and your chapter!

Sincerely,
Emily Kettlewell, CFRE

August Luncheon Program

The Programs v. Fundraising Dynamic

Navigating Community-Centric and Donor-Center Fundraising Tensions

There can often be tensions between program and fundraising teams at nonprofits, especially when one group might be advocating for clients and another for donors. The fundraising profession has debated community-centric and donor-centric fundraising as though they are two separate philanthropic philosophies. The best organizations are those that can combine both philosophies in order to create impactful giving programs that support impactful programs.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: Dr. Colton Strawser, PhD, CFRE is a researcher and nonprofit consultant specializing in organizational dynamics and community philanthropy. Based upon his research in community leadership, findings will be shared on how to consider both donor and community needs simultaneously to achieve community impact. Fundraising professionals can serve as weavers of community needs and donor intents to create opportunities to give that align with organizational and donor values, and these two philosophies have more in common than most think.
