November Developments
With Gratitude to....
This season we want to express our gratitude for all the community support that Yachad has received. Over these past many months we have been careful and creative as we do our best to carry out Yachad's work. It takes many people in faithful partnership with us to achieve our mission to help families live in healthy and safe homes. From our volunteers to our funders to community partners, we could not and can not do it without you.

Thank you,

Homeowner Spotlights: Making a Difference
"I’ve always been here.... I don’t know where else to live." -- Ms. Holloway
Willa Holloway, a DC native, fell in love with her Congress Heights home when she moved in with her husband 26 years ago. They raised four children in this home built in 1945. Her husband, who was the handyman doing most repairs himself, died last year due to Covid-19.

Ms. Holloway, who now shares the home with her daughter and 1-year-old grand baby, wants to stay in her home, but it is a struggle managing the aging home. Broken outlets and an outdated electrical system that often blew fuses were challenges. With few working outlets, the family ran multiple extension cords throughout the house from one floor to another creating tripping hazards.

Yachad gave the home’s electrical system an overhaul replacing the original fuse box with a new electrical panel, repairing and replacing and installing new outlets. The broken stove was also fixed and now the family can safely cook meals.

A Yachad Housing Navigator is assisting the family in applying for the District's LIHEAP and Weatherization Assistance Program.
"I wouldn't be at this point without Yachad." -- Ms. White
dilapidated porch
Yachad's work with the White family continues this fall. The first step this summer was to replace the White family’s roof. Thank you Wood and Whitacre Contracting. Yachad also addressed the home’s electrical problems by upgrading the old electrical panel and replacing hazardous outlets. Thank you Silco Electric.

Our next big project is to take down the dilapidated and hazardous back porch system and replace it with a new first floor deck. To do this project, Yachad is partnering with YouthBuild, a nonprofit that provides young adults with training in construction skills while earning a GED.

Lastly, Yachad staff is working with the family to support their efforts to receive services from the District’s Lead Reduction Program due to the peeling paint throughout the home. Lead paint is a danger to young children and must be remediated.

The family is relieved that their home is becoming healthier and safer in partnership with Yachad.
