Arts Agency awards nearly $900,000 in arts grants

RISCA awarded 149 grants totaling more than $898,653 throughout Rhode Island to arts and culture organizations, individual artists, folk apprenticeships and fellowships, arts educators and schools, and arts and health.

The grants received support from appropriations by the R.I. General Assembly and were federally funded through the National Endowment for the Arts.

Some examples of projects supported in the current round of grants that have been announced:

  • Capeverdean American Community Development, Pawtucket, to host youth art classes on upcycling in fashion design taught by a visual and media art coordinator at AS220, Providence.
  • Frank Olean Center, Westerly, to offer art workshops for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A public exhibition of the work is planned at the completion of the project.
  • Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, Newport, to give East Bay Met High School artists hands-on experience in a clay studio -- connecting social and empirical reasoning to their art practice and then will display them at the Newport Art Museum.
  • Rhode Island Youth Theatre, North Kingstown, to produce a musical tour of North Kingstown’s historic locations to usher in the 350-anniversary celebration of the town's founding.
  • Jason Roseman, Pawtucket, to focus on his craft as a second- generation builder, tuner, and educator for the steel hand pan drum.
  • Jing Wang, Providence, is a renowned composer and performer on the instrument called an erhu (Chinese two-stringed violin). Wang’s apprentice will work on mastering the instrument and will perform for an audience.

Call: R.I. Fire Academy Phase 3, Exeter

Eligibility: Open to all working artists from New England and New York. Students are ineligible to apply.

Budget: $28,000.

Deadline: Sept. 3, 2024

Artwork for Phase 3 of the R.I. Academy will be commissioned through Rhode Island’s Public Art Law, which mandates that 1% of all state capital construction and renovation funds be allocated to the purchase and maintenance of public art. Through this program, the State recognizes that “public art creates a more humane environment: one of distinction, enjoyment, and pride for all citizens”. The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (“RISCA”) administers the selection process under the provisions of the law.

The mission of the Rhode Island State Fire Academy (RIFA) is to provide coordinated education and training to the fire services; promote and enhance firefighter safety; and develop high-quality training programs. It serves the training needs of Rhode Island’s 6,000 firefighters by offering basic and advanced training in various disciplines as well as a Municipal Recruit Firefighting Academy.

This unique project embodies the spirit and purpose of the RIFA training facility. As a possible jumping-off point, the panel would like artists to consider the essence of the building’s use and role in preparing the trainees for life in public service. Through RIFA’s rigorous, experiential training programs, trainees hone their skills, learn to work together, and develop confidence and trust in their abilities and each other. Fire service requires physical strength, teamwork, critical observational and communication skills, mental agility, and resilience. This is a job, a lifestyle, and a vocational calling that cultivates a deep sense of belonging, of being part of a community with a storied tradition of service. Fire service requires dedication, courage, and support from family and friends.
