Green Difference Award Spotlight: Rachel Mahalaris | |
|
Rachel Mahalaris is turning recycled plastic grocery bags into "plarn," a plastic yarn she uses to weave plastic mats for people experiencing homelessness.
To make the plarn, Rachel folds the plastic grocery bag into one long strip and cuts off the bottom of the bag and the handles. She then cuts the bag up into long strips. When she unfolds the long plastic strips, she is left with an inch-wide circle of plastic. She ties the circles together and winds them creating a large ball of Plarn, which is used as the yarn for weaving the mats.
Rachel is creating a meaningful way to repurpose the waste created by single-use plastic bags by helping support those facing housing insecurity in her community and neighboring cities.
