The Scripps Howard Fund is expanding its support of Hispanic and Latino journalists by establishing a new internship program.
The Scripps Howard Fund will provide a grant of up to $40,000 for new journalism internship programs aimed at increasing the number of Hispanic and Latino journalists working in specific regions where they are underrepresented in newsrooms.
“Hispanics and Latinos make up 20% of the U.S. population, yet only 12% of those work in media,” said Mike Canan, director of journalism strategies for the Scripps Howard Fund. “The goal of this internship program will be to open doors for young Latinos to get paid professional experience and mentorship – which will hopefully kick-start their journalism careers.”
The one-year grant will fund internships for at least one to two students enrolled in college-level courses or recent college graduates. It can also be used to cover startup costs such as creating a website, marketing materials, research and other expenses. Grant recipients can apply for additional support from the Fund in 2025 and 2026.
The application is open to existing nonprofits. Organizations and/or individuals not registered as a 501(c)(3) are welcome to apply using a fiscal sponsor.
The deadline to apply is August 1, 2024.
