A Great Graduation

KYHS Class of 2024 Bids Us Farewell

Graphic by Technical Staff

The senior class of 2024 made their final appearance Wednesday night at the FAU auditorium for their long awaited graduation. Seniors started their day as usual, but with the added anticipation of the suspenseful ceremony; the students joked but feared about tripping down the aisle, stairs, and stage– so many beautiful opportunities for embarrassment! Before the ceremony began, however, the students first gathered for pictures and pizza. A time necessary for logistics, food and a photoshoot, but also for class morality and comfort. The class could sit and talk for some time before the pressure of the surreal milestone actually kicked in. Finally, caps were being adjusted, gowns were being zipped, and they were off for the stage– which was shortly interrupted by mincha with guests– and then, they were off.

The class was finally walking gracefully down the aisle and up the stage where great lights spotted their vision, but they could still see family and friends looking up at them with faces full of love and pride. The ceremony commenced with Shimmie Kaminetsky leading the room with the national anthem and Hatikva. Aaron Newman ('24) then recited a perek of tehillim for the hostages and soldiers. The recitation was particularly powerful, as Shimmie pointed out, since it was Yom Yerushalayim– the anniversary of Israel’s reunification with Yerushalayim during the Six Day War. Rabbi Lanner and Mrs. Perl shortly followed, both delivering impactful and emotive messages also highlighting the day’s coalition with Yom Yerushalayim. The crowd also enjoyed a Siyum thanks to Binny Perl ('24) and Joshua Haik ('24) on their completion of Shas Mishnayot and Liyul Nishmas Esther Tehila Bat Harav Gavriel Pinchas. Then it was time for our elected class representative Eduardo Kornworcel ('24) to deliver his riveting, hilarious, and touching speech, which reminisced the Class’s highs and lows and encouraged the class for the coming stages of their lives. Additionally, the debut of Odeka’s new song “Mazal Tov!” was released at graduation accompanied with a music video of the senior class.

Finally, it was time for diplomas. Each student was introduced with a teacher’s short blurb on their character, they then walked across the stage, received their diploma from Mrs. Perl and Rabbi Lanner, posed for a quick photo, and received a Siddur from Shimmie as a graduation gift. Once all students returned to their seats, tassels were moved from right to left, and caps were tossed in the air. They were graduates! The sense of accomplishment and community was palpable to anyone present. The flow from laughter to sobriety was consistent and came from deep, resonating places from within the crowd.

As a graduate myself, I want to thank everyone who made this monumental event possible, and everyone who contributed to the graduates being up on that stage. Thank you to both parents and teachers for their never ending encouragement and support, and for being outlets that we know we can count on. We know we don’t always say it enough, but thank you. Mazel Tov to class of 2024!

Senior Trip to Guatemala

Graduates Get a Taste of Guatemala Before They Say Goodbye

Graphic by Technical Staff

As the seniors stepped off their bus in Guatemala they were greeted by the local Chabad with welcoming smiles. There were twelve students who traveled earlier than the rest of the group to go visit a community in El Salvador and see what life was like there. Nier Rubin, an IDF reserve soldier, attended the group in El Salvador through Gautemala and boosted morale while playing his guitar and sharing inspirational stories. The students reflected on this detour excursion and said that it was inspiring and interesting to see a different type of lifestyle such as theirs.

Immediately from the start the graduating class embarked on dangerous and exhilirating adventures such as zip lining, repelling, and hiking. There were more safer options than these and students were able to hike down the waterfall instead of repelilng down. If someone was brave enough to repel, then they stood on top of a 150 foot drop and repelled down solo; the only thing holding them on was a rainforest native tree. Some students also opted to rent a camel to the hike and they all compared it to hiking Masada only twice as difficult. The students all bonded while doing these dangerous activities and had a great time.

Furthermore, the class had the chance to build a relationship with the members of the Chabad in the area. The Chabad was located in Antigua, on a beautiful campus filled with tropical plants, plenty of sunshine, and splashes of rainfall. The Rabbis and people there were so kind and considerate and it was such a great way to start and end our day at the Chabad. They so graciously provided the group with breakfast, pre-packed lunches, and dinner.

Finally, on the last night, all the seniors gathered around and formed a Senior Circle. It was night to remember, we all sat in a circle and recalled our countless highschool memories and lessons that we have learned from each other and these past four years at KYHS. It was a touching moment and an amazing way to end off an unforgettable trip.

The graduating class of 2024 will always look back on this trip as a meaningful and transformative experience and will hold onto the memories for a lifetime. A big thank you to the staff and parent chaperones, and most of all to the KYHS community, for this one of a kind opportunity.
