Communication is key, and our hope is this newsletter will keep you informed, updated and engaged with
all of our programs. I would like to thank Jessica Dickey for organizing and making this a reality.
With the development of the Graduate Medical Education department in 2006, one of the strongest selling points for us has been the family atmosphere and investment in the lives of others. As you look through this newsletter you will see that premise has not changed, it has only grown. I can personally say working with Graduate Medical Education and developing these programs at Magnolia Regional Health Center has been a highlight of my professional career. The physician leaders we have in each of these programs are paramount to our success. A lot has changed through the years but the quality of the education received here has not.

Internal Medicine Residency

2019 has been quite a year for our MRHC IM program! We have had some exciting changes with didactics, community outreach, and partnerships. This year, we transitioned to an integrated lecture curriculum. For example, during the Cardiology Block, our Journal Club, Grand Rounds, and Ambulatory Lectures are all cardiology related. We have also added a new monthly lecture series called Radiology Rounds in which our Radiologists teach our residents and students how to read a wide variety of imaging studies. The biggest hit this Academic Year has been our top-notch Grand Rounds series. We are welcoming experts from UVA, University of Mississippi, UT, UNC, UAB, and Cleveland Clinic to teach our residents clinically and board-relevant topics.

You can see some of the fun we’ve had in the pictures below! The outreach I’m most proud of is seeing our residents, students and attendings work at Dr. Tommy Sweat’s Living Free Clinic. We welcomed three new faculty members this Academic Year! Dr. Chris Tucker, Dr. Ben Long, and Dr. Brentley Frossard have been tremendous assets to caring for our patients and teaching our residents. Dr. Tucker is from Iuka, Dr. Long from Corinth and Dr. Frossard has lived in Corinth for the past three years and is a graduate from our IM residency program. We are so proud to have Corinthians serving Corinthians!

On the horizon is a partnership with the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s IM residency program, set to begin in July. We are excited to welcome residents from UMMC to get a true community experience and will be sending our residents to Jackson for subspeciality electives. 2020 is here and looking to be one of the best years our program has seen!

2019 Annual GME Christmas Party

|
The 2019 GME Christmas Party, hosted by Drs. Chris Tucker and Marlaina Berch at their beautiful home, was a huge success! The night was filled with an ugly sweater competition, as well as karaoke!
|
|
|
|
The GME Department was thrilled to once again be a part of Winter Wonderland. The event began on Friday evening exclusively for employees of MRHC. On Saturday, the event was open to the public and completely free. Our crew had a blast driving the train for the kiddos!
|
|
Cardiology Fellowship Program
|
|
In October, the fellows participated in the 12th Annual Cardiovascular Symposium at the Crazy K Ranch. They all gave stellar lectures and each of them presented research posters. Our fellows continue to impress and we are lucky to have such an awesome group!

Cardiology Fellowship Match

We are excited to announce that we matched our top two candidates in the Cardiology Fellowship Match in December and know they will be a wonderful asset to our program.
Christopher T. Smith, DO (Graduate of MRHC Internal Medicine Residency in June 2020)
Vivek Menon, MD (Current Chief Resident Cleveland Clinic, will graduate in June 2020)
They will begin July 2020.

ACGME Accreditation Update
|
Our Cardiology Fellowship Program received Continued Accreditation, following the recent site visit. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment!
|
|
|
|
“MRHC continues to serve as a core site for third year medical students from several regional affiliate osteopathic medical schools. We also welcome fourth year medical students for audition rotations in inpatient internal medicine. Our students are an integral part of the multidisciplinary team and interact directly with nursing staff, residents, and attending physicians.
We are currently reviewing our affiliations to ensure we get the best possible medical students while also focusing on the southeast region and financial support for our institution and preceptors.”

Earlier this fall, Dr. Preece and Dr. Morris attended the ceremony announcing William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine would be expanding its class size from 100 to 200 students over the next three years. We are excited for them and are proud to be a core site for these students!

Our student doctors played a huge role in the Corinth City Park Pediatric Physicals event! This was a free event to our community and the surrounding counties.
|
|
|
|
The GME Department participated in the Crossroads Career Connection by setting up a simulation table and showing junior and senior high school students how cool it is to be a doctor!

Magnolia GME Alumni Association

The Magnolia GME Alumni Association would like
to invite you to attend our first quarterly social event! These quarterly soirees will be held at various locations, once per quarter, and will be sponsored by local businesses and alumni.
All alumni, residents, fellows, and students are encouraged to attend these events! Our first social will be on January 30th, 2020 at smith. See invitation for more details! We hope to see you there!

Our GME department has a tremendous impact on the health of our community and brings millions of dollars in economic impact each year. We need the help of individuals, businesses, and nonprofits in the area to help grow and develop these programs to sustain their success for years to come.
