It seems like so much has happened since our last newsletter release. Hmmm….where do I begin????
~We welcomed an interim and then a newly-appointed CEO to our facility
~We are awaiting the RRC decision regarding our Emergency Medicine Residency in April
~We had the majority of core students obtain their number 1 spot in the Match
~We welcomed Dr. Valerie Norton (IM Alumni 2014) on the inpatient service for internal medicine
~We welcomed Dr. William Jackson with his lifetime of medical experience into MRCCC
~We bid adieu to Dr. Seger Morris (IM Alumni 2015) and wish him well as he starts an Internal Medicine program in Oxford, MS
~We are in the graduation planning process and will soon welcome new trainees to MRHC on their educational journey
~We continue to support the MRHC foundation efforts for the building of the Thomas L. Sweat, MD Health Education Center
~AND we continue to be academically and clinically strong in the midst of a global pandemic!
I have witnessed the tireless efforts of all our teams through this time; caring for patients & each other, helping minimize exposure to this enemy, and preparing/anticipating what will come. Although our thoughts are on the immediate needs at hand, I maintain an optimistic state of mind and eagerly anticipate a bright future for our facility, our training programs, and for all of you who are reading this.
As alumni, cohorts, peers and friends of MRHC GME, our relationships have not only been work related, you each hold a special place in my heart because of your individual personalities, strengths and values. This time of crisis helps ME reflect on what is important personally and professionally. I hope it has done the same for you.
Stay safe! Stay strong! Stay well! AND remember
WHY you do what you do.

ACGME 2020 Annual Educational Conference
|
The GME Department had a great representation at the 2020 ACGME Annual Educational Conference in San Diego, CA! We were excited to attend and learn all about the newest requirements and standards. It was a great conference and we brought back many ideas for ways to improve our programs! We might have even had a little time to explore La Jolla on the day we arrived before the conference began! :)

“Match Day is always an exciting time each year. It comes with hopes and fears and nerves. I’ve not been so nervous about Match since my own Match in 2012! When I opened our MRHC IM list, I felt the same sense of joy and relief and humility that I did when I opened my own Match envelope. These six soon-to-be interns embody what our interview committee was looking for: intelligent, passionate, diverse folks who are excited to train with us at MRHC. National Women Physicians Day

In February, we celebrated National Women Physicians Day! We are so thankful for this group of amazing physicians and are extremely proud to have them representing our program!

Our Internal Medicine Residents continue to play a vital role in the care of all patients. Recently, they participated in the MRHC "Do Your Part" Campaign to encourage members of the community to stay home and practice social distancing during the current COVID-19 pandemic. We are so proud of our residents and their dedication to our program and the community in which they serve.

During this uncertain time, it is important that all hands are on deck. The GME Department has stepped up and volunteered to help with Employee Screenings, as well as other needs around the hospital.
Together, we can stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep our community safe and healthy!

Cardiology Fellowship Program
|
|

Dr. Ted Richards has been accepted into Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Mercy One Hospital in Mason City, Iowa and will begin in July 2021! Congratulations, Ted!
|
|
|
|
Dr. Thomas Flautt and Dr. Alison Spangler have both accepted additional fellowships at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center in Houston, TX. Thomas will begin Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship and Alison will begin Cardiac Imaging Fellowship in July 2020! We are so proud of you both!

We want to recognize all of our fourth year medical students on the NRMP 2020 Main Residency Match. All eleven students matched successfully into the desired field of practice. CONGRATULATIONS on your well-deserved success!
During the COVID-19 pandemic, our students have been remoting in for lectures and didactic sessions while also completing their online modules at home provided by their schools. Some are also assisting remotely with research projects. We continue to keep in touch with them to ensure the wellbeing of our student doctors. We appreciate their willingness to do their part by social distancing themselves.
We are so proud of our third year student doctors and we’re looking forward to their return to our campus once we are on the other side of this crisis.

It takes a village to support Graduate Medical Education!
|
Our GME department has a tremendous impact on the health of our community and brings millions of dollars in economic impact each year. We need the help of individuals, businesses, and nonprofits in the area to help grow and develop these programs to sustain their success for years to come.
As a non-profit association, we rely on our alumni and friends to support our vision. There are many different ways to show your support, so we’d like to outline a few here:

The MGMEAA held its first Quarterly Social at smith on January 30th. We had an excellent turnout and would like to say a big "THANK YOU" to John Leech of Summit Financial for sponsoring our event.
The evening was topped off with a surprise cake and farewell toasts in Dr. Morris' honor given by Dr. Preece and Dr. Baker. We will miss Dr. Morris and his family but are so excited for him to begin his new journey!

Featuring Internal Medicine Residency Alumna Dr. Amanda Finley!
|
Dr. Amanda Finley, Internal Medicine Residency Alumna, is our first GME Alumni Spotlight! She completed residency in 2013. With the closing of McKenzie Hospital in her hometown, Dr. Finley knew there would be a great need for physicians in the area. She moved back to Paris, TN, almost 18 months ago, where she is currently building an educational program at Henry County Medical Center to provide underserved Northwest TN with physicians that will take excellent care of their patients.

Henry County Medical Center presently has affiliations with LMUDCOM and WCUCOM, with 8 third year medical students completing rotations on site. She recalls, "Taking medical students off their clinical rotations during the COVID pandemic was one of my hardest recent decisions. They wanted to stay, but I knew I needed to guarantee their safety."
Dr. Finley is also an active teaching faculty member for the Bethel University Physician Assistant program. HCMC has made an organizational commitment to pursuing ACGME institutional accreditation for GME.

Dr. Finley says, "I have recently been asked to coordinate inpatient physician COVID operations amidst the COVID pandemic. I am so thankful that in this time I know how to practice at the top of my scope of practice, now more than ever, where transfers to regional centers are limited. Without the quality and breadth of the education at Magnolia, I would not have the tools to practice in an unprecedented era. I am beyond grateful for everyone who invested in teaching me how to care, grow, and lead."

Dr. Amanda Finley and Dr. Hayes Baker were inducted as Fellows of the American College of Physicians (FACP) together in 2019!
We are so proud to call Dr. Finley an MGMEAA Alumna and wish her continued success in her future endeavors!

Internal Medicine-Emergency Medicine Symposium Postponed
|
Keeping in mind the health and wellbeing of all healthcare providers and staff, MRHC has made the decision to postpone the Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine Symposium originally scheduled for April 30th-May 1st.
We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will make a decision as to whether or not we will reschedule this event at a later date. Please contact jdickey@mrhc.org for more information or to be placed on the mailing list.
