Friday Devotional:
Psalm 133
Kingdom is a word frequently used throughout scripture. It is a vastly important word but also one that falls short, like any word for what God is doing in the world. We have known far too many "kings" who abused their power. Is this what we mean in describing God? And king in English is explicitly male, but all people are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27): male, female, and beyond. This doesn't mean we stop using the word kingdom, but we can clarify what we mean.
Here the psalmist uses a different word: kindred. It is a reminder that the community of God is family. We are called children of God, heirs of a promise. This is how God's vision is realized: we are kin.
I have heard a turn of phrase as an alternative to kingdom; it is "kin-dom." It's a good reminder that what binds us together is not an earthly concept of a ruler but, rather, God, who rules in love and gathers us as family, It is very, very good when we see all people as our kindred.
Spirit, blow through your creation, reminding us that we are one in your kin-dom. Amen.
