Governing Board August Meeting Update:
Discussion and Financial Snapshot
Elder Hattie Alexander-Key began the meeting on August 6, 2024, with a heartfelt prayer. At the start of the meeting, we took a moment to check in and see how everyone was doing.
Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston joined the Council of Elders and Governing Board members at the powerful MCC Detroit-hosted PAD Conference, an influential gathering of People of African Descent and allies from around the globe. Through worship, fellowship, and deep discussions, we explored the enduring impact of white supremacy culture on MCC and identified paths toward racial equity. The conference was a testament to the strength and resilience of our community, and Rev. Elder Cecilia is grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many inspiring individuals.
Beyond the PAD Conference, Rev. Elder Cecilia, the Council of Elders, and MCC staff focused on providing spiritual guidance, supporting our pastors and congregations, advancing racial equity initiatives, and strengthening leadership within the MCC. As the political climate evolves in many different parts of the world, they remain committed to offering solidarity and hope to our communities, particularly those facing increased challenges.

The Governing Board approved two motions based on the recommendations from the General Conference Commission. The first motion proposes that a General Conference be scheduled after General Conference 2025 to allow for the incorporation of any lessons learned. A Special General Conference will be held online within 12 months of General Conference 2025 to discuss and vote on the recommendations. The second motion suggests that the Governing Board promptly appoint a separate body to examine the advantages and disadvantages of voting in two houses and explore potential alternatives. This body will also consider the eligibility criteria for voting and/or having a voice in decision making.
The Governing Board members will consider any bylaw amendment proposals they wish to bring forward and work with the Moderator before the September meeting.
The Governing Board will discuss eligibility requirements and timelines for eligibility to vote at its September meeting.
