SUMMER AT YOUTHHQ

YouthHQ@Goodwill is our youth center for middle and high school students in the Roanoke Valley. In the summer, YouthHQ is a free all-day summer camp and during the school year is an afterschool program. Students were busy all summer long experiencing activities in self-care, college week, career awareness, nutrition and fitness, field trips, and more!

This summer YouthHQ also celebrated its 5-year anniversary on July 28th! Night @ the Q was a special evening in honor of our youth services team and the community for their continued support. The highlight of the night was spotlighting different forms of art created by 10 of our very own youth. View photos of the event.

Our STEAM Camp was held July 31 - August 11 and was a half day program for middle and high school students where they gain a deeper understanding of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) in the world around them. Students went on STEAM themed trips to Virginia Tech, the Roanoke Police Department, Carilion Clinic, VT Carilion School of Medicine, Grace Covenant Church, the Taubman Art Museum, and the Roanoke Forensics Lab. GOODWILL GIVING CIRCLE

We are excited to announce that we have launched the Goodwill Giving Circle! Automatic monthly giving is the easiest way to support the mission of Goodwill. When you become a member of the Goodwill Giving Circle monthly giving program, your consistent stream of support allows us to offer community members the training, resources, and support they need to overcome obstacles and succeed in the workplace – achieving their greatest potential.

It’s simple and easy! You specify the amount you would like to donate each month and at the end of the year, we will send you a gift acknowledgement summarizing your donations.

Here are just a few reasons why the Goodwill Giving Circle might work for you:

  • Affordability: Automatic Monthly Giving allows you to give larger annual gifts through smaller monthly payments.
  • Convenience: Your gift will be withdrawn each month and you’ll receive a single summary of all of your gifts at the end of the year.
  • Flexibility: Choose a donation level that works for you.

If you have questions about the Goodwill Giving Circle monthly giving program, please contact the Philanthropy team at philanthropy@goodwillvalleys.com or call (540) 581-0620.

MELROSE PLAZA

On Friday, July 14th, we hosted Jazz in July @ Melrose Plaza with over 200 attendees. It was the first event at the future home of Melrose Plaza, and everyone enjoyed an evening of music, fun, and fellowship. Events like Jazz in July play an integral role in the NW Roanoke community revitalization.

We are currently working with multiple wellness providers to determine the structure of the Wellness Center and its offerings. We want to work with providers to find the best opportunities to meet the community's needs.

The Excel Center® is planned for Phase 2 of the Melrose Plaza Project. Its anticipated August 2025 opening is scheduled to align with beginning of traditional school year following the approval of necessary state funding.

In 2024, The Market on Melrose will become a line of business under Goodwill's Business Services. Goodwill is working with MDI, a firm that supports independent grocers with essential expertise, infrastructure and scale to support Goodwill’s operation of The Market on Melrose.

Bank of Botetourt has formed an internal task force for planning and preparing resources for the new Melrose Plaza branch. They are actively recruiting positions for the new banking center.
