SEPT 2023

Volunteers in Action and at Play 🕺🏼🎉🥳

We are always trying to find ways to share the tremendous value that’s given to the Goodman community through all your time and effort. We count hours worked, shifts filled and length of time spent in relationship with our programs and community members.

I hope you enjoy, as much as I do, this array of photos from this summer including our recent Staff and Volunteer party. We can’t capture every volunteer here – but we hope this line up gives you a sense of all the dynamic and heartfelt work offered across all our programs.

Thank you for being with us to make the magic happen!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Elise Cowley

Older Adult Lunch Volunteer

I started volunteering at Goodman in 2020 as a fill-in driver for senior meals. When the senior meal program started back up in-person in August 2021, I transitioned to helping out as a Monday first shift senior lunch volunteer, and I've stayed there ever since. I started volunteering because I wanted to give back to my community. I didn't have money to give, but I did have time. I had gone to various activities at Goodman over the years and knew it was an organization with a wide reach in the community, so I filled out the volunteer application. This was also in the midst of the pandemic when many of us were thinking about ways to give back and how we could contribute. A friend, whom I admire very much, mentioned in 2020 how people can talk a lot about how they think society should function and work better, but what are they actually doing about it? That conversation catalyzed my want to volunteer. I wanted to be a part of a community and help others, not just talk about helping others.

SHOUTOUTS

Shout out to Lucy Goeddel who, despite her desire NOT to touch any produce past its prime, is always willing to jump in and help us set up our produce stand for Thursday pantry, even the icky stuff.

Shout out to our Wednesday night pantry crew for always helping out up until the last moment. Ensuring that everything is taken care of from the beginning of pantry to the end, including putting things away and closing up for the night. Wednesday nights tend to be our most hectic food pantry night with large families coming together and English often being the minority language spoken in the room.

Shout out to Mr. Fisher who volunteered in Orange Room this summer for always playing fun games with the kids and being a generally cool guy!

Major kudos to the 40 individuals and teams who helped us with another successful Backpack Drive. Volunteers collected and sorted donations, broke down countless boxes, counted and recounted items and arranged our give-away room to be welcome and easy to navigate. Thanks to Baker Tilly, C. Blohm & Associates, Fetch, Fiskars, EUA, Axley Attorneys and TruStage for encouraging staff to come help out!

Homework Help needed at East High School!

Every year, Goodman Center supports study tables for the East High School athletes to keep them on track academically so that they are able to continue to participate in their favorite sports and activities. Volunteers meet students in the study hall with East High School athletic department staff.

During the shift, volunteers are paired up with a single student or are organized in small groups to work on assignments and test preparation. Tutors are needed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Liza Gabrielse

Hospitality and Events Manager

I’ve been working within Goodman’s Hospitality department for a little over two years. I’m currently the Events and Hospitality Manager, but I was managing the front desk over the last few months. It was my first managerial role, so I definitely got invested in being a manager and figuring out what does and doesn’t work. I thought about the managers that I really looked up to and what they did, and I tried really hard to be that kind of person. I really loved the job because it was all about the people. Managing Events and Hospitality is more about doing market research and seeing how we can be better and get more clients. It’s a lot more behind the scenes work than the front desk, but still really important to me and to Goodman. My background is in catering, so I really enjoy working with our catering team and the teens. The teens are as skilled and professional as any other catering team I've worked with, so it’s really rewarding to work with them and watch them succeed. Teens can have their own set of priorities and lots of choices about what they could be doing, so I want them to want to keep coming back by hopefully being a role model and connecting with them.

Everyone at Goodman is so generous and kind, and I’ve learned so many things from them. It’s been a huge improvement in my life. I come from a family of service industry workers, so I never thought I’d leave that field, but Goodman makes me, and my skills, feel so valued. When I was over at the front desk, I had a lot more interactions with volunteers because Ironworks really is their hub. The work they do is incredible. I was shocked to learn how many volunteers it takes to just run the food pantry and the older adult program efficiently. They couldn’t possibly function without the volunteers. And Susan was so generous giving the front desk volunteers, people like Julia and Donna were instrumental in helping us keep the back hallway safe for the kids—they were our legs when we had to stay at the desk. The front desk is everyone’s first impression, you know, and to have a volunteer greet you and say ‘hi, this person will be with you in a second. Can I help you with anything in the meantime’ is so important to our day-to-day operations. We couldn’t serve as many people as we do without them.

Outside work, I’m a big hiker. I come from a family of hikers. The most beautiful hike I’ve been on is Smoky Mountain in Tennessee. I went with my grandparents who actually got written about in a paper for hiking the mountain more than anyone. It’s a six-hour hike, so it’s the longest hike I’ve ever been on, but getting to the top was a moment of ‘wow! I really did this.’
