Dear Congregants,
I was having a conversation earlier this week with Cantor Nate who is deep into music rehearsals for High Holidays with the other musicians. He had been rehearsing with the accompanist on some of the music that he will be doing and told me how excited he was about the upcoming High Holidays. “It’s going to be great!” That’s so Cantor Nate…and that got me excited.
Music is a huge part of our High Holidays. Our preparation is already well-underway so that we can bring our best to you. Along with our musical offerings are the stories of brokenness and healing from our residents, staff, and alumni. This High Holidays, just like those in the past, will have wonderful music and powerful storytelling that will inspire you toward change, growth, and possibility in this coming New Year.
So, if you haven’t joined or renewed your membership yet at Beit T’Shuvah, I invite you to do so and join us at High Holidays so that we might be inspired toward change together.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Micha'el

THIS WEEK'S TORAH PORTION
By: Chaplain Adam Siegel
Two weeks from tonight, on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, we’ll include the Shehecheyanu prayer as part of the kiddush (sanctification) ritual. This prayer is an acknowledgment of the arrival of a new experience and expresses gratitude for help in our getting to this moment. However, I’m not sure if it will be able to fully encompass the uniqueness of celebrating the High Holy Days during life in a pandemic. The pandemic has forced all of us to adapt and re-configure so many aspects of our lives, with our ritual celebrations as no exception. So what are we to do? (Hint: part of the answer includes Beit T’Shuvah’s virtual services. Click here for more info.)
As it has for the past six months, this pandemic will cause us to find sacred space in front of our screens, not in a synagogue. It will cause us to find community in our separation and connection in our distancing. Our Founder Harriet Rossetto recently wrote, “… deprived of many of our traditional High Holiday rituals, we are invited to find new meaning in the coming Days of Awe. … Relieved of the trappings of external definition, how do I rediscover my essential self-worth?”
Fortunately for us, this week’s Torah portion provides us with some guidance. We find ourselves in the final chapters, of the final book of the Torah, in the final days of Moses’ life. He is standing in front of his...click here to read more.

THIS WEEK'S SPOTLIGHT
Gavin B.
As the tie-dyed tapestries and colorful band posters of his childhood bedroom started to cave in on him, Gavin looked up and begged any deity that would listen to spare him for just one more day. When he woke up the next morning, covered in sweat, he had no idea how he managed to stay alive… he was just grateful that he did.
If you have been around this community recently, you have undoubtedly come in contact with Gavin B. Not only is his jovial energy wildly infectious, but he has his fingers in every possible creative endeavor he possibly can. From rapping during Shabbat to making films for the film department, there seems to be no limit to how Gavin can find ways to express himself. Sadly, it wasn’t always like this for him. For most of his life, this level of creativity was nothing more than a pipedream.
