Extra! Extra!

OGUMC Under Holy

Re-Construction!

Oak Grove UMC is discerning if we should move from our current multiple committee leadership model to a single-board leadership called Simplified Accountable Structure (SAS).

  • What: SAS is a single-board leadership model consisting of 9 members plus the Pastor (BoD –Section 247.2, 2016). This simplified structure allows for expedited decision-making on important items, allowing our Church to focus on our mission of discipleship.
  • How: If approved through a majority vote of Oak Grove UMC church members the initial Board will be created. The initial board will include members from each of our church leadership committees: 1) Church Council, 2) Staff Parish, 3) Finance & 4) Trustees to create the board of 9 members.
  • Why: By simplifying the structure of church leadership, management activities are streamlined, freeing up people to have more time to engage in the work God is calling us to do so that our church to continue to thrive.

Next steps:

1. Spread the word – Attend one of the Q & A sessions or have a member of Oak Grove’s SAS Communication team come speak to your group.

2. Q&A session during Church Town Hall – Sunday, June 9th @ 12:20pm and Wednesday, July 10th @ 6:00pm

3. Time to Vote – Join us on Sunday, July 21st at 12:30pm (following 11am service) to vote via paper ballad

Our next Golden Oaks gathering will be held on Tuesday, May 21, in The Bridge beginning at 11:30 AM. We’ll enjoy an indoor picnic. Buck Hodges will be cooking burgers and hotdogs on the grill, and we’ll have lots of fixings and condiments along with potato salad, watermelon, and dessert. A $5 donation is requested to help cover the cost of lunch.

With Memorial Day the following Monday, we’ll have a patriotic theme. A special treat will be a visit at 11:45 AM from Oak Grove Kindergarteners, who will sing for us.

Our program following lunch will be presented by Dan Cooke, Crime Prevention Specialist with the Chesapeake Police Department. He will be giving us useful information on personal safety that includes common scams and fraud that are currently being seen in Chesapeake.

Please sign up to attend no later than Sunday, May 19. Sign-up sheets will be available in the adult Sunday School classrooms and on a table outside of Whitehurst Hall. You may also sign up by contacting Carol Avenson (avensoncarol@gmail.com or 757-749-0574).

The upcoming Craft Night is Monday, May 20at 6 pm in the Bridge . We will be making flower broaches. Bring craft scissors, green floral tape, silk flowers (possibly roses, peonies, daisies, sunflowers, etc.), pin backs, glue gun if you have them.
