Ten Holiday Shopping Tips
  1. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member and park in a well-lighted area.
  2. Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.
  3. Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside.
  4. Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.
  5. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home and notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused.
  6. Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car.
  7. Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
  8. Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door.
  9. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.
  10. Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, con artists may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
The City is a Partner; Civic Engagement is Key

Adopt a Street
Goodyear's "Adopt a Street" program (you can adopt a park too) gives local groups and organizations an opportunity to be involved in the community by controlling litter and weeds in an assigned segment of a city street. Each team will receive safety and procedure training, as well as safety vests to be worn while on duty. At least four times a year, the team will pick up litter, pull or cut weeds and remove any light debris such as homemade signs.   Click here for more info or to register.

Are You a Low Water Using Champion?
If your winter water use hovers around 1000 to 2000 gallons per month, you could be rewarded for your habits! When you sign up for the Fix a Leak Challenge, you will receive water-saving tips and information on prizes like Spring Training tickets. Sign up before December 30.

Help Inform Regional Human Service Work
Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) seeks your input as the Human Services and Community Initiatives committee prioritizes their work. The survey will remain open until December 4, 2015. Weigh in on regional human services priorities by taking the survey here

Special Census Final Count Down
Census counting is coming to an end.  Major operations in our neighborhoods are winding down through November and into December.  The local special census office may be conducting quality control checks and operations clean up in the first two weeks of December.  The U.S Census Bureau typically does a phone call back to perform a re-interview for quality control.  Census workers may also re-visit residents at their homes.  Your participation will help ensure a complete and accurate population count.  Official results of the special census count will be given to the City by March 1, 2016.  Thank you for standing up and being counted.

Be a Good Neighbor... Follow the Codes

Remember: Code prohibits vehicle operation on an unpaved surface that is not a public or private road, street or lawful easement, and that is closed by the landowner. This includes vehicles such as: off-highway vehicles (OHV), off-road recreational motor vehicles (ORRMV) and all-terrain vehicles (ATV). Code prohibits ATV use on any unpaved surface on High Pollution Advisory Days.

What is a Code Violation?
Complaints of code violations are typically received through our Code Compliance department. The property is inspected by the Code Compliance Officer who determines if a violation exists. The owner or responsible party is notified by the officer and given a set period of time to correct the violation. A re-inspection is conducted to ensure the violation has been cleared.
Only Rain in the Storm Drain

This is what happens when you put paint in a recycling or trash container. The best method of disposal for all types of paint is to "use it up, or pass it on." It is ok to place empty paint cans or paint that has completely dried  in the can in your trash container. If the paint is not dried, remove the lid and let the paint dry thoroughly before putting it in your trash container. Mixing the paint with kitty litter will make the paint dry faster. Paint cans that are not empty should be returned to the point of purchase, donated to a local school, theater group or non-profit agency, or safely stored until a Hazardous Waste Collection event. Otherwise, spills like this damage our pavement and potentially diminish the effectiveness of the waste water treatment process. Click here for a list of trash do's and don'ts.
