Public Safety Tip

Is Your Dog "Crying Wolf"?
Dogs bark. It's their way of communicating with us and that's an especially good thing when they are warning us of danger or legitimately suspicious activity. But, nothing is as annoying as incessant barking -- even for dog lovers.

Some dogs are suspicious of everything! And, some dogs get bored and restless when left alone all day, finding relief in barking.

If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Help is as close as the Yellow Pages (or a Google search). Training not only helps your dog, you'll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate.

Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. Available on the web and in pet stores.

Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate can cut down on the disturbance to neighbors.

Reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. Disconnect telephones and doorbells before leaving your home if they upset your dog or make it bark.

Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship -- a cat, bird, or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service, or drop your pooch off at a friend's place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.
The City is a Partner; Civic Engagement is Key

April is National Volunteer Month
Goodyear's Volunteer Program offers residents the opportunity to be part of the "Goodyear Gives Back" program. Working as a team with staff and other dedicated volunteers, they can make a difference and "give back" to their community. Whether it is lending a hand at special one-day events such as the "Star Spangled Fourth" or assisting employees in city offices with various tasks, their commitment and support is an integral part of the success in growing a vibrant community. Plus, per city of Goodyear policy, volunteers who have worked a minimum of 160 hours and continue to volunteer or work on a regular basis may be eligible for internal recruitment opportunities. Learn more about volunteer opportunities and apply on our volunteer services web page, or contact Missy Jenson, Wellness and Volunteer Coordinator for more information at 623-882-7807

Youth Commission Vacancies
The City of Goodyear is now accepting applications for its 20-member Youth Commission which provides a venue for high school students to develop leadership skills through involvement in city government. The Commission also provides young adults with an opportunity to express their voices on a variety of youth-related issues, such as youth programming, recreation opportunities, and special events.  Youth in grades 9-12 are invited to submit an application and two references online.

Citizen's Police Academy
As part of a continuing program to develop citizen awareness and understanding of the role of law enforcement, the Goodyear Police Department created a Citizen's Police Academy designed for citizens of all backgrounds and occupations. It is a 10 week, training program of both classroom and "hands-on" instruction. Classes are held in the evening, once a week for approximately 3 hours, and include a tour of the county jail and police facilities, role playing scenarios, constitutional law, gang awareness, and demonstrations by specialized police units. The program starts April 12, so apply now!
Be a Good Neighbor... Follow the Codes

Remember: All households must sign up and maintain an  account with the city to receive sanitation service regardless of whether the sanitation service is used.

What is a Code Violation?
Complaints of code violations are typically received through our Code Compliance department. The property is inspected by the Code Compliance Officer who determines if a violation exists. The owner or responsible party is notified by the officer and given a set period of time to correct the violation. A re-inspection is conducted to ensure the violation has been cleared.
