Recorder Remarks

Hello Friends,

We hope this February issue of Good Deeds finds you well, safe and keeping warm.

February, our shortest month, has been a month of celebrations along with some disappointment. We cheered on our Eagles team and faced a tough Super Bowl loss. Let’s be proud of their successful season, culminating in the NFC Championship and trip to the Super Bowl!

In celebration of Black History Month, we offer a story about Frederick Douglas who was the first Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia. We also celebrated Presidents’ Day this month. This holiday was originally established in 1855 to honor our first president, George Washington, and was celebrated on February 22nd. The holiday was renamed as Presidents’ Day to honor all U.S. Presidents and was moved to the third Monday in February as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which created more three-day weekends for American workers. I know that is something we all appreciate in the middle of the cold and sometimes dreary month of February! Finally, we celebrated Valentine’s Day this month during which you could find our ROD Tree decked out in red in our lobby as pictured in this issue.

Our volume of documents presented for recording has been steady, reflecting an ongoing downturn in the real estate market which appears to be leveling off. Even when our volume is slow, we here at the Recorder of Deeds office are always hard at work. When not directly serving the public, our staff is busy updating manuals and procedures, reviewing complex documents at our staff meetings, and everyone is undergoing cross-training to become proficient at all the varying functions in our office. We are always working to find better ways to serve you, the public.

We do have an opening for an entry level position: Document Recording Technician I. The ideal candidate must be a detail-oriented, team player with strong customer service skills and some experience in data processing and/or document handling. If you or anyone you know wishes to apply, visit Chesco.org/jobs. Click on the “View Positions and Apply” button and type “Records Management” in the search field.

Thank you for subscribing to Good Deeds. We will continue to distribute our newsletter monthly to keep you up to date about what is happening at the Recorder of Deeds office and offer helpful hints in our 'Ask Bubbles' section. "Teamwork and Service" is our motto here at the ROD. Our team is proud to serve you, the public, to the best of our ability. As we move away from chilly February and into March and more temperate weather, our wish for you is to stay safe, stay warm and stay well.

Please note, you can sign up for future publications here if you have received this in forward.

Team Spirit

We showed our support of the Philadelphia Eagles during, not one, but two of our recent Casual Fridays. Recorder of Deeds team members who double as fans wore their favorite apparel leading up to both the NFC Championship on Sunday, January 29th, and as the Birds entered Super Bowl LVII.

Did you know? Frederick Douglass was the very first Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia (1881).

According to "historical record and more contemporary accounts," Douglass accepted an appointment as D.C. ROD for perhaps three reasons: 1) that position was long recognized as "an exemplar of fairness," which he hoped could finally begin to extend to the Black community; 2) holding this office kept Douglass relatively safe, economically and politically, and he used it to call for more standard treatment of Black people through governmental units such as the U.S. Supreme Court; and/or 3) as a repository of public information, Douglass’s call for equality was more supported and validated.

Recording Military Discharges as part of Coatesville VA Hospital's Advanced Care Planning Health Fair

We joined the Coatesville VA Hospital on Thursday, February 23rd, at the picturesque Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd for its Advanced Care Planning Health Fair for Veterans. It was a beautiful, sunny day (70°!) and the view of the VA Medical Center from the banquet hall windows was magnificent. Recording your military discharge at the Recorder of Deeds office for safeguarding with quick access is a very smart way to plan for the future! We are looking forward to the next event on our calendar—a Women Veterans’ Lunch Seminar hosted by the ChesCo VA Department on March 10th.

Love is in the air... and on our tree! The office lobby's year-round faux foliage is covered in heart-shaped Valentines, shimmering red garland and twinkly lights for the month of February. It will soon look extra green for Saint Patrick's Day! Search our official hashtag, #ChesCoRODTree, on Facebook or Instagram and see the full, all-season collection!

Bubbles the bulldog is the official mascot of the Recorder of Deeds and best fur friend to First Deputy Erin VanRyn. Bubbles has all the answers to common questions as well as helpful tips to expedite your recording process without any major issues. Woof-hoo!
