First 2024 Human Case of Talaremia Found in Jefferson County

Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) has confirmed the first case of tularemia in a Wheat Ridge resident. This is the first positive human case of tularemia in Jefferson County in 2024.

Tularemia is a bacterial disease associated with animals such as rodents and rabbits, as well as insects such as ticks and deerflies. It can be transmitted to humans through insects, infected animals, contaminated water or food and airborne bacteria.

"While tularemia is rare, it is important for residents to be aware of the symptoms and take preventive measures," said Rachel Reichardt, Environmental Health Specialist at Jefferson County Public Health. "Prompt treatment with antibiotics is effective, so early diagnosis and medical attention are crucial."

Symptoms include fever, non-healing skin ulcer at the site of infection and swollen and painful lymph glands. If the infection is caused by ingesting contaminated food or water, the symptoms include a sore throat, mouth sores, abdominal pain and diarrhea. If bacteria are inhaled, pneumonia can develop with symptoms including fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, dry cough and progressive weakness.

JCPH recommends residents take steps to prevent exposure:

  • Use insect repellent during all outdoor activity.
  • Avoid all contact with wild rodents.
  • Do not feed or entice any rodent or rabbit into your yard or patio.
  • Eliminate piles of lumber, trash and weeds around your home.
  • Avoid touching sick or dead animals or wear gloves if necessary.
  • Do not mow over dead animals.
  • Do not drink untreated surface water (lakes, ponds, rivers).
  • Be sure to cook meat thoroughly before eating.
  • Keep pets on a leash while in areas where contact with wildlife is possible.
  • Consult a veterinarian for any pet interaction.
  • Provide immediate veterinary care for sick pets and do not handle sick pets without using hand and face protection.
  • Tularemia can be treated successfully and cured. See a physician if you experience any symptoms associated with tularemia after being in areas where contact with wildlife is possible.

To learn more about tularemia, visit the Jefferson County Public Health website or call the Jefferson County Public Health Zoonosis program at 303-232-6301.

Please do not pick up or remove animal carcasses, you can report them at 303-384-8048 for professional removal.

Peaks to Plains (P2P) Trail Alternative Analysis

The regional P2P Trail connecting Idaho Springs to Denver is growing in popularity, especially with Jefferson County Open Space securing funding for the remaining unbuilt trail. This popularity also brings challenges to the existing Clear Creek Trail which accommodate tubers, cyclists, pedestrians, residents, and visitors simultaneously.

The City project will conduct an alternatives analysis and engage with the Golden community to determine the best route for a 'secondary route' of the P2P Trail through Downtown Golden.

The City is hosting the second public meeting on July 29 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at City Hall (911 10th Street) to present the draft alternative routes developed based on feedback from the first meeting.

Learn more about the project and upcoming public engagement opportunities on Guiding Golden.

Clear Creek Update

Over the course of the last weekend, the creek saw steady numbers of visitors with city cameras documenting around 5,500 pedestrians on the corridor and 4,100 tubes on the creek. No significant rescues were needed, and the City’s Creek Ambassadors had many successful conversations with people along the corridor. The City anticipates higher volume traffic this coming weekend in conjunction with Buffalo Bill Days. New this year, Adventure West and Golden River Sports will not rent tubes on Saturday to provide an offset for anticipated peak use associated with a City special event permit.

Leadership was made aware of an individual advertising cash payment parking on 13th and Arapahoe the past weekend. This individual was not from the City; the city will never ask for cash payments for parking; please use kiosks or the QR code on signage on street and in lots. More information about city parking, including permits, payment methods, and live parking garage capacity can be found at ParkGolden.com.

As a reminder for community members and visitors, the RV parking lot loop should not be utilized to drop off tubers. The accessible parking lot on 10th Street is only meant for those with ADA tags or 15-minute parking at all hours of the day; all others will be ticketed.
