Artist Selected for Court Mural
We are excited to announce that the artist Michael Talbot has been selected to develop the court mural as part of the Gold Star Mothers Park court renovation project.

Michael is a local artist with works in the Cambridge/Boston area across different media. Some of his past work includes "Collective Ascension," a collaboration between Michael, artist Phoebe "Crazypants" Warner, and teens of the Community Arts Center, that located at the Brian P. Murphy Memorial Staircase at Cambridge Crossing, and "Sequential Progression," an indoor mural at the BROAD Institute in Kendall Square.

You may see Michael out at the courts over the coming months as he gets to know the site. Please feel free to say hello!

Design Updates and Project Schedule
The project team has been advancing the court design based on feedback on the concepts presented last fall. We think we’re very close now and want to share out a rendering of the proposed site design as we continue to refine project details.

We hope to complete project documentation later this spring, and aim to begin construction this summer. We will provide updates on the construction schedule once we have a contract with a general contractor.

The court mural will be installed in the spring/summer of 2025 at the earliest, because it can only be installed under certain weather conditions.

If site construction is completed ahead of that, the basketball court will be striped and available for use until it is time to install the mural.
FYI: Site Work This Week
If you are out for a walk near the courts this week, you may have seen markings in the court area or people and machinery at work at the site. The project team will be conducting geotechnical borings to help inform the design and structural needs for the proposed shade structure.
For More Information
The City of Cambridge will be renovating the basketball court area at the Gold Star Mothers Park in East Cambridge. The project will focus on the paved court area, and will consider opportunities for modest improvements such as trees and plantings along the path between the basketball court and Winter Street, and in the planted area north of the courts.
