Weekly News from Zion and our Ministries Under the Cross: Evergreen Academy & Nina's Place

June is Pride Month in the Zion Community

In October 2022, Zion joined the community of congregations that are Reconciling in Christ, creating an open and welcoming space for all people. We adopted a new welcome statement that reflects this welcome, including that "We believe God loves you for who you are, as you are – no exceptions. We welcome you in the spirit of God’s unconditional love, whatever your race, culture, ethnicity, age, gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical and mental abilities, socioeconomic position, family status, or background."

As people of faith, our support of the LGBTQIA+ community is more critical than ever. As more states double down on LGBTQIA+ discrimination, the advocacy and voices of the entire Zion community have a tremendous impact on the safety of LGBTQIA+ people. We are committed to the support, care, love, and safety of all in our midst, including our preschool, DBCC, Nina's Place, and our entire Deerfield Beach neighborhood and community.

Cantor Kurt Schmidt will be out of the office for the Florida-Bahamas Synod Assembly (and a few days off) from Thursday, May 30th through Wednesday, June 5th. He returns to the office on Thursday, June 6th, just in time for Pre-K Graduation. For any church or pastoral emergencies, please reach out to Dr. Robin Larson at (954) 445-7993.

Rest, Relax, and Read the Psalms

On Sundays, a Psalm is included in the appointed lessons, but even then, we only get a selection of Psalms every year. Our plan is to read through all 150 psalms in this "Summer of Psalms" and sprinkle in some videos, music, commentary, Bible study, and teaching along the way.

Our reading plan includes an opportunity for reading a psalm (or part of one) in the morning and in the evening. You are encouraged to include this as part of your daily devotional practice or Bible study and/or pair them with Luther's Morning & Evening Prayers.

We are going to feature content for our Summer of Psalms on our Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as on our website. Make sure that you're following us, or checking in frequently, so that you don't miss the next installment.

The Psalms are the mixtape and playlist of the Bible, a collection of songs, poems, and prayers that speak to the human experience. The Psalms remind us that we’re not alone, that God‘s not done, and that, no matter what we’re experiencing, we always have reasons to sing.

Nina's Place has expanded into our community including weekly distributions in one of the local senior housing developments and another in the Stanley Terrace neighborhood adjacent to Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex. In both instances, our neighbors do not have transportation to get to Nina's Place.

If you are available during the week, and can help with the daily deliveries from Publix and/or these distributions, please reach out to Alyssa Mayer-Saldivar (our own Zion member & DBCC's executive assistant) at (954) 465-4514.

Third Sunday after Pentecost

Second Sunday Healing Service

A house divided against itself cannot stand. Jesus makes this observation in light of charges that he is possessed. He is possessed, not by a demon, but by the Holy Spirit. We who have received the Holy Spirit through baptism have been joined to Christ’s death and resurrection and knit together in the body of Christ. Those with whom we sing and pray this day are Jesus’ family. With them we go forth in peace to do the will of God.

Sunday's bulletin can be found on the homepage of our website.
