For one Ohio State medical resident, international healthcare feels like home

Saron Checkole, a second-year emergency medicine resident at The Ohio State University, recently traveled to Ethiopia to complete a month-long rotation at one of the biggest community and clinical training hospitals in the nation, Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH). This research hospital has been a hotbed of activity in recent years, serving as one of the main partner sites for Ohio State’s Global One Health initiative (GOHi).

Finding ways to reduce risks of vaccines

With an increased focus on personal health, vaccine safety is top of mind for many around the world. GOHi in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) is directing efforts to monitor adverse events following immunization and collecting data to support ways to ensure global vaccine safety. GOHi recently conducted a sensitization meeting to create awareness about adverse events following immunization and vaccine safety surveillance to improve the quality and effectiveness of immunization programs.

Twinning implementation needs assessment published

Veterinarians are essential partners in advancing One Health and helping to ensure communities have food security, nutrition, poverty alleviation and global health security. Andrea Bessler, a veterinary public health resident at Ohio State, recently dived into the veterinary medicine curriculum in Ethiopia to conduct a needs assessment and evaluate the curriculum implementation. Results of the study are published on the Frontiers in Veterinary Science website in an article co-authored by Amanda Berrian, GOHi director of outreach and engagement and Armando Hoet, GOHi faculty advisory committee member, among others from Ohio State and the University of Gondar in Ethiopia.

Biden-Harris administration release Global Health Strategy

The Biden-Harris Administration recently released a new strategy to strengthen Global Health Security, expanding formal global health security partnerships from 19 to 50 countries. The strategy is guided by three primary goals: 1) Strengthen global health security capacities through bilateral partnerships; 2) Catalyze political commitment, financing and leadership to achieve health security; and 3) Increase linkages between health security and complementary programs to maximize impact. GOHi has already worked to address technical areas listed under the first goal, including addressing critical issues such as capacity building of laboratory and surveillance systems and zoonotic disease, food safety, immunization, workforce capacity building and health emergency management.
