For the fifth consecutive year, Global Education, in partnership with the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs and the Writing Hub, hosted Fulbright Day at UC San Diego on April 14, 2022. This year experienced the highest turnout to date, with dozens of students, faculty and staff attending information sessions on the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program and U.S. Student Program. Fulbright Day also featured a community-building lunch with a keynote address from EVC Elizabeth H. Simmons and participation from VCSA Alysson M. Satterlund. The day concluded with a networking happy hour that connected aspiring Fulbrighters with current Fulbright students and scholars, Fulbright alumni, and UC San Diego staff who support the Fulbright Program.

UC San Diego Professor Receives Fulbright
Distinguished Chair Award in Czech Republic
| |
|
Dr. Michael Pratt, Director of the Master's of Public Health (MPH) Program, will join colleagues at Palacky University Olomouc in the Czech Republic as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair, the most prestigious award offered by the Fulbright Scholar Program. Dr. Pratt has worked with peers at Palacky since 2010 through the International Physical Activity and the Environment Network (IPEN) Project and the Global Observatory for Physical Activity (GoPA!). Dr. Pratt intends to learn best practices from Palacky in order to advance the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science (HWSPH) as a global leader in public health education and research.
His activities in the Czech Republic will build upon the newly ratified Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Palacky; this MOU was established to formalize ongoing collaboration and create access to Erasmus+ funding opportunities. Additionally, Dr. Pratt is working with Global Education to establish agreements with Brazilian, Colombian, Mexican, and Portuguese institutions.
Though this is Dr. Pratt's first Fulbright Award, he was instrumental in launching the Fulbright Chair in Public Health Sciences at HWSPH with Fulbright Brazil. UC San Diego hosted its first Chair, Dr. Pedro Hallal from the Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), earlier this year. The next Chair, Dr. Raphael Mendonça Guimarães from Fundação Oswaldo Cruz in Rio de Janeiro, will arrive in September.
Global Education congratulates Dr. Pratt on this prestigious (personal and professional) achievement and looks forward to continuing to support internationalization efforts at HWSPH!

ISPO Programming Supports Students and
Advances Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
| |
Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) continue to be central to ISPO's vision, mission and core values. ISPO's commitment to EDI both aligns with UC San Diego's Principles of Community and the Division of Student Affairs' Strategic Plan, and provides a framework for inclusive excellence through which the office can better serve international students. ISPO recently launched an EDI website that aggregates campus resources and information tailored for international students. Additionally, ISPO has amplified programming that emphasizes the principles of EDI:
-
iThrive Winter 2022 Conversations on Social Justice: iThrive actively engages students in weekly conversations exploring culture and identity. The Winter 2022 theme focused on advancing social justice and anti-racism, and included conversations on stopping Asian hate, feminism, and gender inclusivity.
-
iTable Basic Needs Program- ISPO and The Hub Basic Needs Center created iTable, a program that provides international students with resources to address food security issues with support from the Basic Needs Committee. The program was launched in 2018 to fill the gap for resources that are unavailable to international students such as CalFesh.

Study Abroad Recognized for Increasing Access to International Opportunities for All
Study Abroad UC San Diego is committed to facilitating and increasing the participation of a diverse student body in all international programs.
UC San Diego has been recognized as a Twenty Year Top Producer of Gilman Scholars! This national scholarship program makes study abroad more accessible and inclusive for students by providing scholarships to outstanding undergraduates who, due to financial constraints, may not be able to participate. The Study Abroad Office coordinates the Gilman applications for UC San Diego, and provides customized advising and support to students throughout the application process.
In addition to nationally competitive scholarships, Study Abroad staff proactively work with students to identify and apply for campus and extramural scholarships.
Financial concerns are the highest reason cited for students never pursuing an international opportunity, and 70% of students who wish to go abroad demonstrate a high financial need to do so. Study Abroad assists students through the entire application lifecycle, including:
- helping students create a budget,
- identifying scholarship opportunities, and
- hosting writing workshops to draft competitive applications.
Through facilitating students' access to financial support, 35 percent of UC San Diego's students who participate in programs abroad come from historically underrepresented groups. For Summer and Fall 2022, that number is expected to rise.
Through targeted cross-campus outreach, Study Abroad staff work to educate all students about the many global education opportunities available to them. By collaborating with campus partners, Study Abroad offers individual student advising as well as information sessions on program options, funding, students’ identities abroad, career development, and more.
Study Abroad staff are actively working to remove barriers to participation and to support students through their journeys abroad.

Another Tax Season Comes to a Close
While performing cutting-edge research and teaching, UC San Diego’s international faculty and scholars must also navigate more mundane aspects of daily living, including understanding their tax filing obligations under a new and very complicated taxation system. IFSO and its Global Education and campus partners provide many services to help our international scholars and students meet their tax filing obligations.
Together with the Payroll Office and the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, Global Education purchases a license to “Glacier Tax Prep” each year for students and scholars to use to prepare their nonresident tax returns; this year, more than 1500 students and scholars used the software and collectively received over $775,000 in federal refunds! Approximately 400 international students and scholars took advantage of IFSO's four tax information sessions this season to learn more about taxation in the U.S., including a federal tax workshop hosted by San Diego State University Accounting faculty and a state tax workshop with Franchise Tax Board representatives explaining the intricacies of the 540 and Schedule CA forms.
IFSO also operates a tax-specific email account, internationaltaxhelp@ucsd.edu, to answer student and scholar questions about filing their federal and state tax returns and pointing them to appropriate resources; this tax season, staff responded to nearly 900 email inquiries.
While tax filing season has come to a close, questions around taxation arise year round as our new faculty and scholars plan their arrival and seek to understand how U.S. taxation will impact their bottom line; IFSO looks forward to continuing to provide these resources and workshops to our incoming students and scholars.

IFSO is Committed to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
IFSO envisions “an inclusive, interconnected campus community.” As part of our continued commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), IFSO developed a dedicated reference webpage as well as highlighted calendars and Center Resources listed in our IFSO weekly E-News scholars’ edition. If you are a department administrator and would like to learn more about IFSO services for departments, subscribe here.
IFSO is committed to respecting and honoring our diverse campus community in accordance with our core values, mission, and vision. IFSO, in compliance with federal, state, and University rules and regulations, will abide by inclusive practices to ensure all international faculty and scholars are respected and included in the campus community.
Federal immigration documents and government databases require that campus offices use information as it appears on the individual's government issued passport. When not federally required, IFSO will always use and be respectful of pronouns, genders, and lived names.
