UNA Westchester Reaches out to Social Studies Teachers
On December 9, the Westchester Chapter of UNA-USA attended the 2022 Annual Regional Conference of Social Studies educators with a display table chock full of information that attendees could use in teaching about the United Nations.

Popular material teachers were glad to find concerned the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which students are encouraged to find creative ways to help achieve. Advice on how to set up and manage a Model UN was sought after as well, as were other activities that could be adopted by high school UN clubs. Our chapter has also put together a practical list of on-line resources for teachers and students wanting to research topics relating to the UN. As a bonus, we were able to offer free UN posters, which teachers eagerly snapped up to put up in their classrooms.

The conference is organized yearly by the Westchester Lower Hudson Council for the Social Studies, although it was absent, as were so many activities, in 2020 and 2021. This year it was held at the Edith Macy Conference Center in Briarcliff Manor, with a theme of “Uncharted Territories: Teaching Social Studies in a Controversial Age.” Featuring numerous workshops over three sessions between 9:30 am and 3 pm, it attracted a multitude of teachers from our area, and the Education Committee of UNA-USA Westchester was delighted to be a part of it.

Join Us!

Are you a humanitarian?

As our President, Marcia Brewster, tells us, that is the only criterion for joining the Westchester chapter of UNA-USA. If you care about the world and its people, if you believe in reaching across national borders, if you cherish the notion of a nation and a world based on justice, equity, and peace, this is an opportunity for you. If you are looking for the chance to work with other socially conscious people, to contribute your expertise, experience, and interest in areas such as social media and advocacy, to be a voice for change, and to support and protect the increasingly vital work of the United Nations, this is the organization for you.

Every year, the Westchester UNA-USA chapter hosts events on Human Rights Day, the anniversary of the United Nations, and International Women’s Day. Each year there is an Annual Meeting and Community Consultation on the Future of the United Nations at which your voice can and will be heard.
