Kelly’s Weekly Update

Happy Friday everyone. We’ve spent most of this week wrangling donations for our annual backpack and school supply drive. Every year, we work with neighbors and local businesses to make sure that every kid who needs one gets a new, cool back pack full of supplies to start their year off right. Demand this year is greater than I’ve experienced in the last 12 years, in part due to the new arrival families into our neighborhood schools. We got a call from the team at Jordan Community School that they were short on packs for their Back to School Bash on Thursday, so we quickly assembled what we had in the office and headed over with a “down payment” of 10 backpacks and supplies. The thing we’ve gotten the least of has been backpacks, so we made an executive decision to make a bulk purchase of 264 backpacks that will be delivered next week. Our supply list linked below shows our supply needs beyond backpacks. If you haven’t already, please consider making a purchase to drop off at one of our amazing neighborhood partners or just stop by the tent at the Glenwood Avenue Arts Fest this weekend to drop off donations. Our team will be there Saturday and Sunday until mid to late afternoon.

It’s always fun to celebrate new businesses opening in our district, so I was excited to spend a few hours Thursday morning with the Rogers Park Business Alliance and staff from Sen. Mike Simmons and Alderwoman Maria Hadden’s offices welcoming some exciting new businesses to our community. The folks at RPBA do a great job of supporting our small business community. We started on Morse, welcoming The Grocer at 1345 W Morse and celebrating the expansion of Asian Station at 1343 W Morse (everything smelled so good, I couldn’t fight the craving, so I got lunch for the team from there after we were done), from there we welcomed Present Moment Journeys, a new therapy provider at 1150 W Lunt and welcomed our new neighbor on Jarvis Moyony Fresh at 1538 W. Jarvis, then I caught up with the RPBA crew at Emmah’s Beauty Empire at 7136 N. Clark. Folks familiar with the braiding studio on Morse will be blown away by this amazing luxury space on Clark (with parking!) and I think I’ve found my new favorite place for a mani-pedi! I missed a couple of stops on the route due to prescheduled meetings, but I’ll add a welcome here to Jarvis Hookah and Smokes and Cafe Nova! I was solo, so don’t have any pictures to share today, but we’ll be sure to post to social when we get the photos RPBA took.

Next week will be a short one for me as the time has finally come for our youngest to launch to Ann Arbor for his college adventure, but the team will be here and ready to assist with any issues that might arise. I’m excited for his new adventure, which helps make it easier to send him off into the world. We’ve got one more to launch later in September, so I’ll remain sappy for a few more weeks.

I hope to see y’all at the Arts Fest this weekend. Don’t forget, there’s no Glenwood Sunday Market this week, so plan to hit the Edgewater Farmers Market on Monday!
