Class of the Board Leadership Program!

The African American Board Leadership Institute (AABLI) held its first two-day intensive training on October 11-12 at the California Community Foundation's Joan Palevsky Center for the Future of Los Angeles. The Board Leadership Program was attended by more than 30 African American professionals, ranging from those who require more in-depth preparation for board placement to those who wish to sharpen their existing skills.
Throughout the program, participants attended workshops on board governance, finance, fundraising and emotional intelligence. Head faculty member Latonya Slack of Slack Global Consulting led a workshop on the fundamentals of board governance, covering topics such as understanding board roles and responsibilities and how to navigate regulations that govern nonprofit boards...

Alumni Leadership Series: State Boards and Commissions with Mona Pasquil
|
 On October 29,2013, Mona Pasquil returned to AABLI to lead yet another informative workshop on State Boards and Commissions. Pasquil serves as the Appointments Secretary in the office of Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. and is responsible for assisting the governor in strengthening his administration by recruiting top candidates to serve on state commissions.
Assisted by AABLI Alumni who have been appointed on commissions (Sherri-Ann Gordon, George Davis, Charles Alexander, Ph.D. and Delvecchio Finely), Pasquil discussed the application and selection process as well as the importance of diversity. We are grateful that Mona has supported AABLI by taking these personal trips to speak with and inspire our Alumni.

Exceptional Children's Foundation's (ECF) mission is to provide the highest quality services for children and adults who are challenged with developmental, learning and emotional disabilities - empowering them to reach their greatest potential. ECF provides programs and services to over 2,600 infants, youths, adults and their families each year. Clients served include people with learning and emotional disabilities, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and related conditions. ECF has 15 program sites located throughout Los Angeles County.

Board Member Spotlight
Carl Ballton is senior vice president and deputy group head of the Corporate Social Responsibility Group of Union Bank. He also serves as president and chief operating officer of the Union Bank Foundation. Ballton is active on a number of boards including Occidental College, The Los Angeles Urban League, Goodwill Industries of Southern California, and AABLI. His board chairmanships include Southern California Grantmakers, California Community Foundation's BLOOM (Building a Lifetime of Options & Opportunities for Men) Advisory Board, and the Southern California Business Development Center.

The Alliance for Housing and Healing's mission is t o provide the basic necessities of life for men, women, children, and families living with HIV/AIDS through a safety net of essential housing and direct supportive services. The Alliance does this through various services including Emergency Rental Assistance, Emergency Utilities Assistance, Licensed Group Homes, Independent Living Apartments, Housing Case Management, Nutritional Programs and Back to Work Programs.

It's important not only to acknowledge them but to keep them informed of your growth and journey, creating a bond leading to their continue to support of your organization. Writer Joanne Fritz has 30+ years of nonprofit experience and provides great insight into the importance of treating all donors equally. You never know where the relationship may lead.
I want to be treated like a major donor.
I can't tell you how many small donations I've made over the years that never grew to larger ones.
Why didn't they? Because I usually never heard back from those organizations.
Maybe you're like me. You like to test out charities with small donations to see if you really want to get involved. But, apparently, I'm just too small a fish for most charities to be bothered with. Fine. Their loss.
