Dear Friends,
Happy March! I am excited to share the third edition of our quarterly newsletter, Giving Forward. Our newsletter lets us bring you updates and information about our commitment to supporting CHRISTUS St. Vincent.
During the holiday season, you provided us with your generosity in raising funds to support CSV's Cath Lab expansion and investment in equipment. Because of your generous support, we can provide CHRISTUS St. Vincent with $53,000!
We are excited to kick off our events season and have three events that will support our fundraising priorities this year. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us!
- Saturday, May 18, 2024 – 9 am – 1 pm – Walk for a HUG 5K Community Event to support our HUGS Program. Opportunities to join us are still available.
- Saturday, August 10, 2024 – Party On! 80's Prom – Sold out; proceeds will support our Cancer Center Capital Campaign.
- Wednesday, October 2, 2024 - Second annual Sinatra, Schnitzel and Champagne dinner at The Compound. Sponsorships are available now, with ticket sales coming soon! Proceeds from this event will support our Nurses' Fund.
I'd love to see you at one of our events, helping us provide vital philanthropic support for CHRISTUS St. Vincent. I hope the spring season brings you and yours love and joy. Thank you for being a friend of the Foundation.

What is the HUGS program and who do they serve?
The CHRISTUS HUGS team provides assertive community navigation for individuals with high utilization of emergency services with CHRISTUS St. Vincent Hospital, EMS, and jails. These individuals often have chronic pervasive mental illness, co-occurring substance use disorders, and chronic homelessness, which limits their ability to engage and participate in outpatient services. The HUGS model utilizes a wrap-around approach to provide individualized, person-centered intensive case management to link each person to long-term supports and services, and works with patients while they are in the hospital and in the community upon discharge.

We cannot wait to walk with you!

Dr. Jennifer Chittum was born and raised in Santa Fe. In fact, she was born right here at CHRISTUS St. Vincent Hospital! She received her Doctor of Medicine from American Univ. of the Caribbean, graduating with honors. She completed her internship and residency in Pediatrics at St. Joseph's Hospital Children's Health Center in Phoenix, AZ.
She has been with the CSV Arroyo Chamiso clinic since 2015, providing exceptional care to address the needs of the children she helps serve.
What inspired you to become a physician?
I recall wanting to be a doctor from a very young age. My father, Patrick Pacheco, had a very successful dental practice here in Santa Fe for many years, so I grew up around healthcare. I started "Candy Striping" at the hospital at the age of 15 and would spend my after-school hours and weekends helping out in various parts of the hospital. I loved it.
What do you enjoy most about being a physician?
Being a Pediatrician is very rewarding. What I enjoy most is watching the kids (my patients) grow up. I have patients that I have been seeing since birth that are now in their early teens. I’m just glad that I’m not getting any older!
What inspires you to give back to CHRISTUS St. Vincent Hospital?
Besides being a very busy Pediatrician, I have found a calling in the area of Patient Experience. I received my Certified Patient Experience Professional (CPXP) designation last year and have been the Medical Director for Patient Experience and Service Excellence for 4 years. I enjoy engaging with our Providers at CSV, providing education and training on the best practices in communication with patients to improve patient experience. I also do direct patient care observations with our Providers in all areas of inpatient and outpatient care to ensure that our patients are getting the best experience when they receive care at CSV.

|
We're getting close! The St. Vincent Hospital Foundation has now raised $7 million of our $10 million goal to help build the new CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center. For all of you who have given to this important effort we want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
CHRISTUS St. Vincent has embarked on an extraordinary journey that promises hope, healing, and life-saving measures. We invite you to be part of history, to stand with us in our mission to transform cancer care in our community through research and patient care.
We extend a heartfelt invitation to you to join us in shaping the future of cancer care in our Santa Fe community and beyond. Every dollar you contribute to our mission keeps our patients close to their support networks, helps sustain the local economy, and eases the logistical burdens they may face. Your support ensures that our neighbors facing cancer can fight with confidence, surrounded by the beauty and strength of our beautiful city.

Both my knee joints have been deteriorating for several years. Multiple surgeons, not in my local area, recommended knee replacement when I could no longer stand the pain while walking. I decided to undergo the surgeries after my retirement as an airline Captain in March 2023.
Many of my local friends advised against having the knee surgery locally in Santa Fe for a multitude of reasons, mainly the lack of experienced surgeons and concerns about patient care in local hospitals. However, I decided to start researching local knee surgeons and facilities online before looking outside of Santa Fe.
My primary healthcare doctor is associated with Christus St. Vincent Hospital, so I started my search online via the Christus St. Vincent website. There, I quickly found Dr. Carothers, who had the education and experience I felt comfortable with for my knee surgeries. I called to schedule a visit with Dr. Carothers at the Christus St. Vincent Orthopedic Center in February 2023.
My initial visit with Dr. Carothers was very informative and pleasant. He spent as much time with me as I needed to understand what was ahead for knee replacement. He reviewed my knee x-rays and fully explained the knee replacement surgery and recovery expectations. I was impressed with Dr. Carothers’ demeanor, knowledge, and his ability to explain in layman’s terms what to expect.
After my initial visit with Dr. Carothers, I immediately scheduled my left knee for surgery in May 2023, followed by my right knee in September 2023. Scheduling with Janica was quick and efficient. She provided a comprehensive timeline for me to accomplish both surgeries.
Dr. Carothers completed both surgeries at the Christus St. Vincent Surgical Center as scheduled. Overall, the surgeries and recoveries were less debilitating and painful than I ever expected. The Christus St. Vincent hospital surgical process and procedures were comforting and efficient. Recovery and follow-up visits were accomplished as planned. Pain management throughout the entire process was exceptional. PA Jefferson Tyler, who works with Dr. Carothers, was also excellent in his care and discussion with me pre and post surgeries. Overall, they were a great team.
Today I’m back walking and hiking 3-5 miles daily and bike riding with no knee pain. I must say, my knee replacement experience has been a gratifying and rejuvenating experience.
Cheers, Dave C.

Edwina Vargas is the Foundation Coordinator for St. Vincent Hospital Foundation. Prior to joining the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation team, Edwina worked at the CSV Outpatient Behavioral Health Specialty Clinic. Edwina brings to her role over 25 years of experience in the healthcare field. The skills and knowledge that she developed working as a healthcare administrator and front office lead have transitioned well to her new position. Born and raised in Santa Fe, Edwina is excited to be of service through the many philanthropic opportunities of St. Vincent Hospital Foundation. Edwina is the proud mom of her two children and loves spending her free time with her three beautiful grandchildren.
What does your role as the Foundation Coordinator entail?
My role as the Foundation Coordinator is to provide a high level of administrative support to the Chief Development Officer, Foundation staff, Foundation Board of Directors and its committees. I pride myself on providing timely support in a professional manner and performing diverse administrative duties to the best of my ability and skill set.
What inspired you to pursue a career in philanthropy?
I’ve always gravitated towards jobs/careers that helped others. I’ve spent over 25 years working in various roles in the healthcare field and my passion for helping and caring for others ultimately lead me to the world of philanthropy. I found the challenge and opportunity of furthering my career in a different healthcare field enticing, and I’ve been able to utilize my strengths and skills that I have developed throughout the years in this new and exciting roll.
What do you enjoy most about your role on the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation?
My role on the Foundation team has allowed me to continue making a direct and positive impact on other’s lives. I’ve really enjoyed helping our fellow CSV associates learn more about the various ways and resources our Foundation can help them. At CHRISTUS, we have a great fund called the Associate Assistance & Recognition Fund. This fund is used to help our fellow associates in times of personal financial strain and department leaders can use this fund to acknowledge and recognize high performing departments and individual associates. I’ve really enjoyed helping other associates learn more about this fund and helping them navigate through the initial steps of the application process.

Share Your Love of Reading with the Next Generation
| |
|
In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, you can spread the luck of the Irish to our children of Northern and Central New Mexico by making a gift to our pediatric “Reach Out and Read” Program!
During well visits at Arroyo Chamiso and Entrada Contenta Pediatrics, all children ages 6 months - 5 years of age will receive a book at every checkup. Our providers and staff talk with parents and caregivers about the benefits of reading aloud and sharing with their young children beginning at birth. Providers and staff show parents and caregivers how to hold books to best engage their children, and how to interact with the text and images to help them follow along. We share advice for talking about stories with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Families gain a deeper understanding of why they should make reading a daily habit and leave inspired to cuddle up with their young one and a book. This helps encourage early reading which in turn helps brain growth and development in the early years. In our community of Northern New Mexico, there are many families that cannot afford books for their children to read.
Bring the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to our Pediatric Clinics, by giving a gift to our Reach Out and Read Program.
