Fall is in the air which means that American Thanksgiving and the Winter Holidays are just around the corner. This is also the time of year that we are conducting charity site visits, facilitating family meetings, updating holiday giving budgets and meeting with other advisors as they plan out their clients' philanthropic activities.

So it seems fitting that we talk about Giving & Receiving, Grantmaking, Holiday Philanthropy and new this year, Indigenous Grantmaking. This is also a good time to start talking about the longevity of your giving plan.

We have also launched a blog series on sunsetting your foundation (winding down your giving). Over the course of the next few weeks we will answer six questions and highlight things to consider in planning your Foundation's exit.

Of course, we also have our 2023 Charity List. These are the organizations that our clients and donors have supported this past year.

Sunsetting a Foundation:

A Blog Series

Sunsetting or closing down a foundation or Donor Advised Fund (DAF) combines emotions with transactions. Over a series of blog posts, we will answer questions on How, When and Why to sunset a foundation.

In the first post we identify six questions to consider when planning to sunset your foundation. These six questions will be addressed throughout the series.

The first of the Sunsetting a Foundation series can be found here.

Grantmaking:

Less is More

Granting making can be arduous for both the charity requesting the funds and the grant-maker. An initiative in Germany called "Less is More" was pulled together by a group of foundations in Germany and Austria "In order to provide foundations with ideas on how they can strike a balance between trust and control in grant relationships."

The Grantmaker's Toolbox focuses on five areas that most Funders encounter during the course of a relationship with a Grantee:

  1. Funding applications
  2. Reporting
  3. Restrictions and Flexible Funding Models
  4. Agreements and Contracts
  5. Leveraging Other Non-Monetary Assets (the 4 T's of philanthropy)

A copy of the Toolbox can be found here.

From Breakthrough Community Change - Book Review

Population change grantmaking is hard work. This past quarter we had the opportunity to chat with Paul Born about his most recent book, Breakthrough Community Change. Prior to this discussion, when we talked about large-scale or Big Bet funding, it was referred to as system-level grantmaking. This book challenges the reader to move from the distant or disconnected funding of systems to the more integrated or personal funding of populations.

Big Bet funding requires funders, Grantees and End-Users to come to the table with open minds. The solution may not be as self-evident as one thinks. Conversations starting from a place of curiosity is a key characteristic of how communities move the dial on the complex issues that they face.
