We run trips on the Upper James River in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.   TRO offers its customers fun and safe river trips that range from lazy river to whitewater paddling experiences with true mountain views. We offer a variety of single day and multi-day river based camping trips. We are the oldest and most experienced outfitter operating on the Upper James River and have been safely running paddle trips since 1978.

Looking for a unique outdoor weekend or summer vacation option for 2017?

Consider booking a 3 night stay or more at our James River Rental House in Buchanan, Virginia.  If you book before 1/1/2017 and ask for our Christmas special you will receive a free river tubing trip for your group and 20 percent off any other canoe or kayak trip reservations during your stay (minimum age 6 years old, and must be able to swim). The house sleeps upto 12 guests and features 5 bed rooms, 5 bathrooms, a formal living room, dining room, court yard, and a kitchen.

Located in the historic Town of Buchanan on main street, the house is one block away from our canoe livery which makes it the perfect place to stay if you are visiting to enjoy the river. The James River House is located within walking distance of several restaurants, a historic swinging foot bridge over the James River, park, public boat landing, and a movie theater.   During your visit be sure to check out the near by Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia's newest State park at Natural Bridge and the Virginia Safari Park, which are all less than 15 minutes away.

Start Planning Your Spring Weekend River Adventure

Next Spring, consider a weekend in the great outdoors canoe camping with your friends or family. This is a great way to help cure cabin fever with an outfitter taking care of the details. This 22 mile river adventure features numerous class I and II rapids that make the trip exciting but is typically not too difficult for the skill level of most groups.  The river section below Eagle Rock was voted the "Best Class I" trip in the southeast in Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine and is the only section of the James River with the "Scenic River designation."  Camping is at our new Horseshoe Bend campground built out in 2016. Camping features picnic tables, fire rings, port a potties, and lots of level gravel areas for tents or hammock friendly trees.  Just bring your camping gear and food and let the outfitter take care of the rest.  Groups typically arrive by 8:30 am or 11 am on a Saturday. 

Pricing is typically around $74 per person plus tax and includes 2 days paddling, and 1 night camping.  Rate includes use of outfitter grade dry bags, 5 gallon water containers, canoes, paddles, life jackets, maps, safety briefing, camping access, and all required shuttles.
