Had enough of the TEP Maps?

Make your opinion known!

If you voiced your opinion in the long past--you must do it again! The earlier project named "Kino to DeMoss-Petrie Project" (where most of us have already voiced our concerns) is obsolete. It has now become the "Midtown Reliability Project" and the opinions may not transfer. So please take the time to submit your comments again. No 138kV poles overhead in Jefferson Park!!!

GRANT ROAD - Phases 5/6

Jefferson Park, please note! Grant Road Phase 5/6 involves the JP area from Mountain Ave. to Santa Rita on the south side and all the way to Campbell on the north side. See item #5. Will we still get the promised green space? This is an important meeting; we need to stay informed.

Helicopters over the neighborhood

No helicopters should be flying over Jefferson Park Neighborhood (unless an emergency). The required flight pattern to the helipad is from the south. Banner records all non-compliant flights and called-in reports. They use this data to educate pilots and helicopter companies. Put the number in your phone and report fly-overs. It is quick and easy.

Organic Weed Killer...

Tips from Organic Gardeners on Weed Control:

Use a hoe - stirrup, scuffle, and hula. A hoe is easiest to use when weeds are young and ground is still a bit damp. This tool gets at the roots and can prevent further weeds. Pick up weeds after hoeing to prevent seeds from dropping to start a new cycle of weed growth.

Use white vinegar as your weed killer, rather than herbicides which kill more than weeds.

From Tucson.com: Making an organic weed killer at home is so easy you’ll never need to buy another harsh herbicide again. To create a natural weed killer, you’ll need just three affordable ingredients:

  • 1 gallon of distilled white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of biodegradable liquid dish soap
  • 1 cup of table salt

Instructions:

  1. Pour the vinegar into a large bucket.
  2. Gradually stir in the cup of table salt until it completely dissolves.
  3. Add the liquid dish soap.
  4. Thoroughly mix the solution until all ingredients are well combined.
  5. Put the homemade weed killer into a spray bottle for easy application.

Spray the white vinegar weed killer directly on leaves and stems of the weeds you are targeting, taking care not to get it in your eyes or on your skin! This mix is powerful and long lasting - do not spray on or near landscaping plants!

You can also pull large weeds by hand, or use a weed extractor tool that digs up the root. Use a weed extractor where a hoe will not work - near other plants, walls, and landscaping materials.

Cleaning up spring weeds takes some effort, but you'll be rewarded by a fresh yard that's ready for summer!

Gas Operated Weed Blowers

The story of gas leaf blowers:

Prior to the 1970s  clearing sidewalks and yards was done by raking and sweeping. My childhood memories are of pleasant homes and businesses.  The marketing of leaf blowers created a new product that led to expectations of large expanses of bare land.

Leaf blowers are a source of controversy due to their adverse impacts such as operator injury, including hearing lossparticulates, air pollution, noise pollution,  and an increased risk for airborne fungus and bacterial disease such as valley fever. For an outline of the issues go to:  https://sustainabletucson.org/energy/clean-sweep/

We may think we are helping landscapers, who use gas leaf blowers, to feed their families but if we are contributing to their poor health we are robbing their families of a healthy breadwinner. If we can afford to hire landscapers we can protect everyone’s health by employing landscapers that rake and sweep and use electric lawnmowers and weed trimmers.

If we care for our own yards we can learn to rake and sweep and plant low water plants which shade our yards.

(Rosemary Bolza, JP neighbor)
