Take a closer look...
About the INTERSCHOLASTIC EQUESTRIAN ASSOCIATION (IEA):
- Open to riders in grades 4-12. Middle School (4-8) and Upper School (9-12).
- Teams consist of a coach aged 21+ and at least 3 riders in either Middle or Upper School.
- Enrollment is open year-round for riders. However, the majority of teams and riders are signed up by early October in order to get in a full show season.
- Each team must have access to an equine facility whether in a private or public school, or at a local barn.
- Horse and tack assembled for all competitions by host team(s), participating teams and local universities. Riders do not need to own a horse or tack to participate in IEA.
- A random draw determines the rider's mount for every class (catch-ride format).
- Scores are based on horsemanship/equitation. Riders and teams earn points to qualify for post-season competition.
- Unique team competition format levels the playing field while maintaining affordability for participants. Plus, in a traditionally individual sport, the team aspect brings a whole new level of camaraderie, teamwork and fun!
- IEA offers five class levels from Beginner walk-trot to Varsity Open in the following disciplines:
-
HUNT SEAT (Over Fences and on the Flat)
-
WESTERN (Horsemanship, Reining and Ranch Riding)
-
DRESSAGE (Test and Dressage Seat Equitation)
- Prepares riders for collegiate riding format. College recruitment opportunities available. IEA is the largest feeder organization of youth riders into IHSA, NCEA, and IDA college riding programs.
-
Over $1.1M dollars in Cash and Collegiate Scholarships was awarded during the 2022-2023 season alone.
-
Riders compete individually and as a team from August to April in a maximum of 5 shows for Hunt Seat and Dressage and 6 for Western.
- Founded in 2002, IEA has grown to over 14,600 members on 1,500 teams nationwide offering more than 800 annual horse shows.
- IEA is a great way for trainers, riding instructors and show barns to expand offerings to lesson and/or camp students, create year-round competitions and additional income, and provide confidence-building skills in catch-riding a variety of horses.
- Approximately 55% of IEA riders own or lease a horse outside of IEA and belong to at least one of the following organizations: USEF, USHJA, AQHA, APHA, NRHA, NSBA, 4H, Pony Club, AHA, USEA, or USDF.
-
IEA launched a NEW ADULT PILOT PROGRAM in 2022 for Amateur riders 21 and older. Learn more about the Adult Program Here.
