In the new political reality of "Brexit means Brexit" (whatever that means), it appears likely that the UK will undergo a revolution in trade never before seen. In the tyre business, the most directly affected sector could be the wholesalers, who already occupy a space in the supply chain in flux as a result of developing attitudes to online commerce (a sector also fittingly examined in October's T&A). The only obvious and immediate short-term effect of Brexit is the weakened position of the pound, which naturally affects wholesalers' businesses, though reduced consumer confidence is another by-product to some extent, while other concerns such as the volatility of shipping markets continue to rumble on. Meanwhile, continental wholesalers are continuing to consolidate, with closer cooperation between themselves, or in conjunction with large manufacturers, a theme that continues to develop. Tyres & Accessories will ask key players in this field to consider the new reality of an impending post-EU future, as well as discuss the latest non-Brexit developments.

Demand for aftermarket components for wheels and other automotive applications is rising in line with the average age of the UK car parc. The SMMT reports sector turnover to be more than £21 billion, however it estimates this figure will rise to £28 billion by 2022, by which time the sector will account for more than 400,000 jobs. Such figures are hard to ignore, and therefore the automotive aftermarket will come under the spotlight in October's Tyres & Accessories. Pick up next month's magazine for news and product information in our dedicated aftermarket feature.

The role of computers, the internet and software in the tyre business has never been greater. At the OEM level, carmakers (as well as automotive suppliers) recently introduced a bespoke car operating system based on the highly respected unix/linux platform, which enables them to coordinate and standardise software developments and systems interactions. At the same time, various sensor chips are talking to each other and to other vehicles more than ever; and all of this is connecting to the outside world via the internet, satnav and driverless technology.
On the replacement side of things manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers alike are getting to grips with the new generation of connected consumers that almost entire pre-research and increasingly make purchases online. And this all makes CRM, SEO, social networks, e-commerce and the like as important as ever. Turn to October's edition to plug into the latest virtual happenings.
