Families in Scouting

For over a century, the Boy Scouts have created opportunity for millions of boys, including Tim McCandless, the current CEO of the region’s Narragansett Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Growing up, Tim always regretted that his sister was not able to participate in Scouting with him and their three brothers. This is a major reason why he welcomes the news that girls will soon be able to join Scouting.

The Boy Scouts' mission is to prepare youth to make moral and ethical choices throughout their lives by instilling in them the values of Scout Oath and Scout Law. The new Families in Scouting initiative will allow the Narragansett Council to bring these benefits to even more youth, families and communities.

Here’s a story about how the new initiative is off to a strong start in one local town:

“We're All Railroad Guys”

Seaview Railroad is Quonset Business Park's short line railroad. Last year the railroad broke the record at Quonset for the volume of rail cargo delivered from across the country to businesses in the Park.

Seaview has also played a key role in the State's successful "Trains to Planes" program which delivers passengers directly from rail stops between Providence, TF Green and Wickford Junction to the annual Quonset Air Show. By serving 4,300 passengers and taking over 1,400 cars off the road last weekend, "Trains to Planes" significantly reduced traffic congestion to the Air Show for the third straight year.

Seaview owner and president Eric Moffet sat down for interviews recently to talk about the importance of rail to Rhode Island’s economy, and how the State could look to its neighbor Connecticut to grow it’s commuter rail ridership.

Investing in Future Scientists

Southern Sky Renewable Energy RI is the leading solar and renewable energy company in the state. The company recently sponsored scholarships awarded to Johnston High School students. The $1,000 scholarships were among those awarded to 15 outstanding seniors planning to attend colleges in Rhode Island.

“We are pleased to be able to recognize Johnston’s top science students and make a contribution to what will certainly be a bright future for them,” said Southern Sky president Ralph A. Palumbo. “We hope that this group includes one, or more, of the future leaders in developing the next generation of scientific breakthroughs in clean energy technology.

Infrastructure Week a Success

Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank is the state's central hub of infrastructure financing for communities, small businesses and homeowners. Recently, RIIB joined the national nonprofit Infrastructure Week, engaging in events highlighting the state's infrastructure needs and spotlighting various infrastructure projects financed with help from the Infrastructure Bank.

Jeffrey Diehl, CEO of the Infrastructure Bank, penned an op-ed in the Providence Journal and visited the state's leading public affairs programs to promote Infrastructure Week events and discuss the Bank's continuing efforts to strengthen the Rhode Island economy and protect the environment.

Hospice Patient Able to Attend
Son's Wedding

Peter Calos, a hospice patient battling pancreatic cancer, was determined to attend his son’s June wedding in Maine. But when his disease progressed faster than anticipated, the family – with help from HopeHealth and the community – threw a wedding in April in the center’s gazebo where Peter could participate. The day was beautiful, which Peter was able to share.
